Prof. Pierpaolo Marano Pierpaolo Marano holds a Ph.D. in Banking law and regulation from the University of Siena. He is also an Associate Professor at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, a scholar in residence at the University of Connecticut, School of law – Insurance Law Center, an Affiliate Faculty at the Department of Insurance of the University of Malta, and an Honorary Fellow at the University of Hong Kong – Asian Institute of International Financial Law. A widely sought writer and speaker on insurance law and regulation and one of the drafters of the Italian Code of Private Insurance, Pierpaolo Marano is the author of two monographs, co-editor of ten books, and author of over 100 academic papers on insurance law and regulation, corporate law, banking law, and bankruptcy law. In order to ensure a sustainable and effective consolidation of the institutions of the University of Latvia (UL), the Council of the University of Latvia on 22 April supported the rector’s proposal to create six faculties instead of five, by dividing the originally planned Faculty of Medicine, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing into two – the Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, and the Faculty of Science and Technology. The consolidation decision on the establishment of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Faculty of Education Sciences and Psychology, and the Faculty of Law remains unchanged. On May 26 at 15:00 the lecture “The Rule of Law Mechanism and the Hungarian and Polish Resistance” by Prof. Dr. Christoph Schewe from the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel-Altenholz/Reinfeld will take place. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the whole world, including the European Union member states. Prof. Schewe stresses that in order to foster the process of the economic recovery of the European Union, the member states agreed on a financial aid package combined with a regulation – the conditionality mechanism - that provides for financial sanctions in the event of a breach of the rule of law. Given that the positions of Poland and Hungary during the adoption process of this regulation caused a controversy, the presentation examines general questions on the rule of law, the regulation and the background of the controversy. The name and contributions of a talented figure to the development of a better, fairer daily life, over time, serve as a story for inspiration, and a solid foundation for further development of law. In cooperation with the University of Latvia (UL) foundation, several dozens of relatives, friends and associates of the distinguished lawyer and UL graduate Kristīne Krūma have created a scholarship in her honour. The creation of the Kristīne Krūma Memorial Scholarship in 2016 was encouraged by her students, UL graduates Mārtiņš Paparinskis and Ieva Miļūna . The scholarship was created in remembrance of the life and contributions of the UL Faculty of Law graduate, lecturer, former prorector of Riga Graduate School of Law (RGSL) and Judge of the Latvian Constitutional Court Dr. iur. Kristīne Krūma (1974-2016). The founders of the scholarship explain that, in a broader sense, the goal is to support European Union (EU) and international law studies and research in Latvia
