Appointed three new vice-rectors of the University of Latvia

The Council of the University of Latvia (UL) has appointed three vice-rectors, who will begin their duties today, on 3 April. Professor Kristīne Strada-Rozenberga has been appointed as Vice-Rector for Studies, Associate Professor Guntars Kitenbergs – as Vice-Rector for Science, and Enno Ence – Vice-Rector for Development. Prof. Kristīne Strada-Rozenberga is a sworn advocate, an expert in criminal law, until now she has served as the dean of the UL Faculty of Law. Her significant contribution to the development of the Latvian justice system, strengthening of democracy and the rule of law has been recognized with the Letter of Appreciation of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia, the Letter of Appreciation of the Supreme Court and the Honorary Badge of the Second Degree of the Justice System and the Golden Honorary Badge of the Ministry of the Interior. She has also received the awards of University of Latvia Student Council, as well as other marks of distinction

was granted to - Aleksejs Ketovs (Faculty of Law). Kārlis Kaufmanis’ Memorial Scholarship was granted to - Elvijs Matrozis (Faculty of Physics and Mathematics). Jānis Priedkalns’ Medicine Research Fund Scholarship was granted to - Darja Svirina, Zane Vīksna, and Sintija Sauša (Faculty of Medicine). Ernests Felsbergs’ Memorial Scholarship Ernests Felsbergs’ Memorial Scholarship was founded in 1999 by the UL Maecenas Guntis Bērziņš, the grandson of Ernests Felsbergs – a Professor and Rector at the UL. The scholarship is to support diligent and bright students of Humanities in their studies at the UL. Modris K.Gulbis’ Memorial Scholarship The scholarship commemorates the Priest of the USA Twin Cities Christ Congregation and Professor at the UL – Dr. Modris K.Gulbis. The scholarship was founded with the aim of supporting gifted and industrious students, who wish to dedicate their lives to Lutheran parishes in Latvia or abroad, in their studies at the UL Faculty of Theology. . Anna Mezaka, a scientific assistant at the Faculty of Biology at the University of Latvia will conduct her research in ecology. "To my mind, the USA is a place where the natural sciences are well developed. Moreover, there is a wide range of sciences where one can improve one‘s knowledge - knowledge which can later be passed on to students in Latvia.“ The third scholarship recipient is Arturs Kucs, head of the Faculty of Law’s International Law Department at the University of Latvia. He will conduct his research at the University of Connecticut on the theme "Balancing the freedom of expression and hate speech: legal doctrine and case-law in the United States." Former U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright established the Fulbright program in 1946. The goal of the program is to increase mutual understanding among the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Straight from EU to the 7th World Congress on Adult Capacity!

During the period from June 7-9, 2022 , our researchers Solvita Olsena and Laura Kadile will attend the 7th World Congress of Adult Capacity in Edinburgh, Scotland , representing Latvia and the University of Latvia, Faculty of Medicine. The theme of the Congress covers the institute of decision-making capacity, especially how the law works when other people have the power to make decisions for someone else. The Congress is also about how the adult can be involved in these decisions as much as possible.* These include people with learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, dementia or mental illness. The overall goal of Congress is to protect and ensure the rights and legal interests of these people. During the Congress S.Olsena and L.Kadile will take an active part and present detailed overview of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment's (CPT`s) jurisprudence.Both researchers together will participate

The Library of the University of Latvia (UL) offers a unique opportunity – from 3 to 14 January the Library will be open from 9:00–21:00* on week days. It will be possible to use this chance at the following Libraries of the UL: Central Library (Kalpaka Blvd. 4) Multi-branched Library: Computer Science, Law and Theology (Raiņa Blvd. 19) Reading Room at the Library of Economics (Aspazijas Blvd. 5) Library of the Humanities (Visvalža St. 4a) Library of Education and Psychology (Jūrmalas Avenue 74/76). * On Saturdays and Sundays the Library will be open as usual: the Central Library – from 10.00–18.00; Branch Libraries – from 10.00–17.00 on Saturdays, but closed – on Sundays. From 3-14 January the Library of the Faculty of Social Sciences will be open from 10.00-20.00 on week days, but on Saturday – from 12.00-17.00.

300 years anniversary of the University This year, the University of Burdundy celebrates its 300th anniversary! How about a flashback? Imagine that we are in 1722, when a law school was set up in the Dijon city centre; in the 19 th century, a few faculties were added, forming the university of Dijon, and in the 20 th century, the University expanded, covering the whole region and thus becoming the University of Burgundy. Thus, over time, the small faculty of law managed to became a university that grew ever larger to– 300 years later– become a multidisciplinary university in the field of research and excellence, including disciplines that range from archaeology to artificial intelligence and providing 400training courses each year. This University has 300years of history behind it, and it is rooted in its territory: Burgundy. We do not turn 300every day; therefore, many anniversary related events are going to take place throughout this year to make it a flagship event, as well
