Applicants hold a bachelor’s degree or tertiary professional diploma (recognized as equal to a bachelor’s degree). Foreign students are asked to pass recognition of their diploma in accordance with the legislation of Latvia (by the Ministry of Education and Science according to the Law of education, item 11). The Latvian Academy of Sciences grand medals awarded to Vija Zaiga Kluša and Kalvis Torgāns

On November 29, the highest award of Latvian Academy of Sciences – the Grand Medal, as well as Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation prize were conferred upon the Full Member of LAS, Professor of the UL Faculty of Medicine Vija Zaiga Kluša and the Full Member of LAS, Professor of the UL Faculty of Law Kalvis Torgāns. Dr. habil. med. Vija Zaiga Kluša received the Latvian Academy of Sciences Grand Medal in honour of her creative achievements in pharmacology, higher education and work of merit in advancement of Latvian Academy of Sciences. Dr. habil. iur. Kalvis Torgāns received the Latvian Academy of Sciences Grand Medal to celebrate his work in establishment of modern school of civil rights in Latvian legal science and outstanding contribution to implementing theoretical cognitions in practice. The President of LAS Ojārs Spārītis in his address to Autumn General Meeting of LAS emphasised that the LAS tribute to the centenary of the state is the nominees for the highest recognition

The Political Science Department of the University of Latvia's Faculty of Social Sciences, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, for the seventh consecutive year hosts students from various Ukrainian universities in an intensive training three-month-long module the Young professionals` school: “Studies of the European Union – Internal and Foreign Policy”. This year, the project will be implemented from 20th September to 18th December 2020. The studies take place in English and are meant for Ukrainian students who obtain or have already obtained higher education. The European Studies module consists of two integrated parts: Foreign Affairs (with courses such as Europeanization: from partnership to membership and Foundation of the European Union ) and Domestic Affairs (governance and management of the European Union, politics and policy in Latvia, strategic communication and public diplomacy). Certain forms and types of traditional crime in postmodern society are transforming into thedigital environment, including through theuse of DarkNet platforms. At thesame time, criminological research in Latvia is insufficiently developed, criminology study courses are not included in all law study programmes. In the21st century, new criminological approaches and schools are emerging, including neocriminology, synergistic, narrative, digital, neurocriminology. Appropriate criminological approaches have aspecific nature and content. These trends confirm that, despite theimportance of criminology, there is aneed for research into thedevelopment trends of organized crime, cybercrime, trafficking in human beings, drugs and arms, and thepossibilities for combating and preventing them.
