Dita TRETJAKOVA Number of publications by University of Latvia in citation databases tends to grow, that can be observed in both reviewed databases (Scopus and Web of Science). Publications also have quite high citation rate.Both databases regularly update information and it can change rapidly. Also into account should be taken that publications are often indexed in both databases. Number of publications in natural sciences is greater than in social sciences and humanities, leadership takes physics and related fields. However in evaluation of data should consider that there are science fields that cannot be judged by their coverage of publications in citation databases. Jelena POLAKOVA The UL Foundation invites students twice a year to apply for the grant named in memory of Foundation Patron Kurt Hagen and go to study at the UL partner universities in Germany. Kitija Auzina, a 1st year student at the Master Study Programme of Philosophy (UL Faculty of History and Philosophy), is the first recipient of the Kurt Hagen’s scholarship. She left in April for the University of Tubingen to dive into her studies of Immanuel Kant’s work. The first graduate in the Baltic Sea Region Studies – Dins Merirands
Anete BERTHOLDE Since 2005 the UL Faculty of Humanities offers possibility to obtain a Master’s degree in Baltic Sea Region Studies. The programme prepares qualified analytics who specialize in the Baltic Sea Region, its political, economic, social and cultural processes. Dins Merirands, the current Director of the Energy Department of the Ministry of Economics was the first to complete this programme 5 years ago. The rest of his study mates did not finish the studies within the set time-frame. In the interview, Dins tells us about the article on an Internet website that encouraged him to find out more about the new study programme. He also shared his memories from the study time and explained how the knowledge acquired through studies can be applied in daily work. There will be no end of the world
Jelena SMELOVA Professor Valdis Seglins has worked at the University of Latvia (UL) for 20 years, and at the moment he is the Head of the Applied Geology Department at the UL Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences. He is also the author of an illustrated book „The Written Treasures of Ancient Egypt” (“Senās Ēģiptes rakstu dārgumi”). The book, recently published by the UL Publishing house, covers various topics – from pyramid scripts to the Book of the Dead. This printed issue received „The Golden Apple-tree” award for the excellent quality and formatting. The book is not only visually attractive, but also provides a fresh outlook on Egypt. V. Seglins’s inquisitive spirit, patience and wish to explore the world provide a guarantee that new research, not only on the topic of Egypt, but also on many other topics, will develop. Andra CUDARE Edite Simanovica is the Director of the UL Culture, Art and Educational Creation Association. She has worked at the University for 42 years and she leads 19 creative collectives – choirs and folk dance groups. Edite, a keen choir singer herself, loves her job dearly, and due to her enthusiasm the UL creative work continues to flourish. Conversation about science reveals new horizons and seeks a better life for man
Gita SILINA Social anthropology is a new science in Latvia; however, there are two researchers, Agnese CIMDINA and Ieva RAUBISKO, working at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia diligently and fighting for their way up. A conversation about social anthropology, its contribution to the society and what forms the lens through which the social anthropology investigates things; as well as about what is the discipline’s place and relationships among other helps reveal new horizons. Ieva LEJASMEIJERE The atmosphere at Anniņmuiža manor is lively and envigorating. It turns out you can access the University from the yard side without entering any of the ‘big houses’. You have to turn off the cycling road Riga–Jurmala to the old lime alley. At the end of the meadow is located the manor with its lord –professor of the University of Latvia, Juris Leitans. The students convince that it is all for real here – not virtual and boring but practical and inspiring. The diploma projects of the last years – gigantic insects and flowers made of metal, that can still be viewed in the corridors of the UL Faculty of Pedagogy, Psychology and Art – testify to their authors’ profound knowledge of the material and its properties. The metal art expert Juris Leitans first associates in our mind with extraordinary aluminium jewellery ornamented with precious metals and gem stones. The artist has been working at the University of Latvia since 1995.
