Introduction: Irifunetei Kotatsu
Entrance free. Rakugo is several hundred years old, originating from priests telling enlightening stories in temples. The art evolved to telling stories that were no longer enlightening – today, it serves a wide range touching all human emotions from happiness to sadness. Rakugo has a set of characters, very much like the European commedia dell'arte characters. There is the stupid craftsman, the clever wife, the greedy merchant, the cunning child. Many of these stories have been handed down from master to disciple – the older stories that are still played today can be traced back to the Edo period. The rakugo-master does not have to adhere to his master’s text completely. Every artist gives the stories his own twist, and so the stories are ever changing. For example – one artist may draw the wife of the protagonist as loving and caring, whereas another would portray her as cunning and scheming. Yet another might not include her in his version of the story.
