Riga, August 1, 2013. – Islands of Riga will be the focus of Riga Summer School this year, which the University of Latvia organizes for foreign journalism, film and media students already for the third year in a row. The overall theme of the summer school is the identity of Riga neighborhoods, usually captured on short videos by the participants.

Although islands are not what Riga is known for internationally, this summer the students will shoot their short documentaries on various islands, among them Andrejsala, Kundziņsala, Ķīpsala, Lucavsala, Mangaļsala un Zaķusala. As usual, students will work in small creative teams, thus sharing the whole production process among participants from various countries. 26 participants will represent 16 different countries: Mexico, Nigeria, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, Germany, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. This year for the first time high school students from the regions of Latvia, interested in documentary filmmaking and audiovisual journalism, will attend the summer school. Riga Summer School 2013 will begin on Saturday, August 3, with an opening picnic for the participants on a boat in Daugava River. It will last one week with lectures, workshops, filming, editing and social events, such as International Cooking Evening and Baltic Film Evening. At the conclusion, student film premieres will be held on Saturday, August 10 at 19:00, to which all interested people are invited. It will take place at the Berlin Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Latvia, Lomonosova street 1A. Riga Summer School is organized by the Communication Studies Department at the Social Sciences Faculty of the University of Latvia in cooperation with several partners. The summer school is supported by the state research program “National Identity” and Live Riga; the scholarships are being given by The State Education Development Agency.
