H.E. Mr Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey, delivered the lecture Turkish Responsibility and Investment in Global Challenges at the UL Faculty of Social Sciences on October 23, 2014.

The delegation of the newly elected president of Turkey was welcomed in the Isaiah Berlin auditorium. It was honoured by the presence of Ina Druviete, the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, and Indriķis Muižnieks, the Prorector of the University of Latvia. The Prorector gave an opening speech and introduced the audience with the distinguished guest speaker. Then the floor was given to Ina Druviete, who expressed her pleasure for the established cooperation and the presidential visit. This was the only lecture held by the President of Turkey during his visit to Latvia. Students of political science and other audience interested in world politics were very grateful for having this unique opportunity to listen to such highly respectable guest speaker. President Erdoğan expressed his appreciation of the friendship between the two countries, which is strengthened by a common priority - such as promotion of peace. He addressed the young audience and stressed that social networks do not encompass all types of media, and encouraged them to explore different media platforms when searching for information. At the end of the day Mr Erdoğan and a Faculty representative exchanged gifts and souvenirs. Latvia was the first EU country visited by President Erdoğan. During this visit he had a meeting with Latvian President Andris Bērziņš and discussed Turkey’s ambition to accede to the European Union as well as certain issues of regional security and cooperation.  Recep Tayyip Erdoğan continued his official visit going to Estonia.
