On May 19th 2014 University of Latvia was honoured to welcome Chairman of the Nippon Foundation Yohei Sasakawa and director of the Tokyo Foundation Takashi Suzuki.

In accordance with the agreement signed on March 19,  2002 between University of Latvia and the Nippon Foundation the University of Latvia is awarding Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF) scholarships. The scholarships have been awarded since 2003/2004 to 96 fellows in total (21 master’s level and 75 PhD level students). 69 leading higher education institutions in 54 countries are currently participating in SYLFF program. The distinguished guests, as well as the Minister of the Education and Science Ina Druviete and rector prof. Marcis Auzins opened the conference  „World in Change: from Consumption to Sustainability, from Competition to Collaboration, from Hierarchy to Networks, from being Good to Doing Good”. The conference featured reports by SYLFF fellows from Latvia, Poland and Germany.
