On April 3, 2012, the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) announced Latvia’s most significant scientific achievements of 2011 based on the submissions by the universities, scientific institutes and centres.

Among them is the 11th issue of “Overview of Nation’s Development 2010/2011: National Identity, Mobility and Capacity” ("Pārskats par tautas attīstību 2010/2011: Nacionālā identitāte, mobilitāte un rīcībspēja"), edited by Prof. Brigita Zepa and Dr.sc.soc. Evija Klave of the UL Social and Political Research Institute. The issue has been compiled by the UL Social and Political Research Institute (SPPI) in collaboration with partners from the UL Faculty of Economics and Management, the Latvia University of Agriculture and the Baltic Institute of Social Sciences. The overview of 2010/2011 was completed as part of the National Research Programme “The National Identity” with an aim to consider the content of individual’s national identity within nation’s development. The overview pays special attention to emigration since the nation’s development is hindered by the decrease of its population. Emigration and settling in another country indicates a continuous competition and transformation of national identities. The overview also helps identify the conditions and factors (capacity) that increase a person’s attachment to a certain place or region.
