The “Masterclass of Excellence” is a one-day international seminar organized by the University of Latvia under the auspices of the European Commission Representation in Latvia on May 13, 2015 in conjunction with the 4th meeting of the management committee of COST Sci-GENERATION “Next-generation scientists – toward a true European Research Area?” that will be held in Riga, Latvia on May 14 and 15, 2015.

Live video stream from 2:15 pm The purpose of the Masterclass is to spotlight career success stories of several top-level European young researchers. The invited speakers will share their personal perspectives and join a panel discussion to seek the common narrative of successful transition to independence and leadership. Their bottom-up perspective on the "receiving end" of science policy will help identifying the pivotal policy elements that are most effective in promoting the excellence of the next generation of scientists in Europe. The Masterclass of Excellence mentors are distinguished researchers representing diverse scientific domains from across Europe: Thomas Schäfer – professor at University of the Basque Country, Spain, a multi-disciplinary researcher of mixed-matrix and stimuli-responsive membrane technologies; Liesbet Geris – professor in biomechanics and computational tissue engineering at University of Liège, Belgium; Alexander Fidora – research professor at ICREA-Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Bellaterra, Spain, distinguished expert in medieval philosophy as well as the intercultural and interreligious dimensions of medieval thought; Andris Ambainis  – professor in computer science, University of Latvia, one of world's leading experts on the theory of quantum computing; and Søren Frank  –  associate professor in comparative literature at the University of Southern Denmark. Counting together, the mentors have been principal investigators of five European Research Council grants; four are members of the Young Academy of Europe, all are active contributors to Sci-GENERATION. For the panel discussion, the researchers will be joined by Dr. Agrita Kiopa, deputy state secretary and director of the Higher education, science and innovation department at the Republic of Latvia Ministry of Education and Science. More information about the participants. An audience of 25 invited guests from universities, research policy organizations, and research institutes of Latvia will contribute live questions and opinions during the seminar. The event will be moderated by associate professor Vyacheslavs Kashcheyevs. Live webcast of the event in English will be provided by the University of Latvia at www.lu.lv/tiesraide/2/nc from 14:15 to 17:30 local time (UTC +3h) on May 13, 2015. Video record with an optional Latvian translation will be made available after the seminar on the website of the University of Latvia. Sci-GENERATION stands for “Next Generation of Young Scientist: Towards a Contemporary Spirit of R&I”. It is a pan-European platform for young, outstanding European next generation researchers established in order to share and transmit their visions on emergent research paths and research policy as well as their experience and ideas. Sci-GENERATION runs as a Targeted Network within COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), the longest-running European framework supporting trans-national cooperation among researchers, engineers and scholars across Europe.
