Ojārs Vācietis (1933 – 1983) was one of the most prominent Latvian poets of the 20the century who still is getting most contradictory evaluations. His creative activity and personality made a remarkable impact on the historical course of Latvian literature and intercultural communication in the second half of the 20th century, receiving a strong response also from broader society outside literary circles. Ojārs Vācietis' poetry possesses an especially rich and diverse intertextuality not only in the context of poetry and social processes of his epoch – the Soviet era, but also echoing contemporary changes in the world, which actively contribute to the transformation of the meaning/world of Ojārs Vācietis' poetry and its fresh interpretation.
The First International Research Conference, "Human Freedom. Human Voice", devoted to the poet's 70th anniversary took place in 2003, to highlight Vācietis' literary legacy. The second conference is held on the initiative of Ojārs Vācietis Society and the poet's spouse Ludmila Azarova (1935-2012) in advance of the poet's 80th anniversary; the event was predetermined by new research and translations, and artistic and human values in Ojārs Vācietis' poetic world, those already discovered and yet to be discovered.
The conference brings together university professors, researchers, students and authors from Latvia, as well as Lithuania, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Russia. The conference readings reveal the poetic world of Ojārs Vācietis through four major themes: Ojārs Vācietis as intertext for Soviet Latvian poetry; Ojārs Vācietis and expatriate literature; Ojārs Vācietis, Latvian poetic tradition and contemporaneity; Ojārs Vācietis in translations and other arts.
The Conference is held as part of the National Research Programme "National Identity" and is organised by the University of Latvia in association with the Academy of Sciences of Latvia, the Riga City Council, the Ape Municipality Council, the Carnikava Municipality Council, the Ojārs Vācietis Museum, the Ojars Vācietis Society and other institutions. The author of the project, Chair of the Steering Committee and Conference Programme Chair is University of Latvia Professor Ausma Cimdiņa.
