This semesters’ Culture Exchange Programme (CEP) has ended - the last meeting was bittersweet and adventurous, because all participants and organizers understood that it was long and joyful road that everybody went through side by side experiencing new things and learning about different cultures.
So looking back in the past - it is very hard to believe that the beginning of spring semesters’ CEP was so long ago - we had our first meeting on March 18th when we introduced participants with the programme for this semester and tried to figure out the basic stereotypes of other cultures. The following unofficial meeting was game night on March 20th at the cosy Biology faculty where it was possible to play various table games to get to know each other better. The second official meeting was about “National Holidays” on April 8th - this time participants had to prepare a short presentation about their country’s holiday traditions and had to do a fun quiz about what they had learnt. On the 3rd meeting on April 15th organizers decided to find out how can all cultures together make this world a better place, so the main theme was “Green lifestyle” where Piet and Elise from “Homo Ecos” invited participants to discussion and creative task about how to prevent pollution all around the world. But participants and organizers not only had discussions about how to make the world more beautiful and clean, but also did something themselves – they went to Latvia University Botanic garden where they joined volunteer cleaning day organised by Students’ Council of the University of Latvia.
The 4
th meeting on April 29
th was about how cultures see each other in action, so participants took a part in “Culturevision” where they had to make a performance about one song from previous Eurovision song contests. The unofficial meeting was held in animal shelter on May 9
th where CEP team used opportunity to walk dogs and enjoy ice-hockey game at fan tent. The 5
th meeting on May 13
th was city orientation where participants had to work in teams and run through Riga to complete the given tasks. And of course the last meeting on May 31
st was kayaking where participants and organizers with kayaks paddled through Riga City Canal and Daugava and enjoyed picnic afterwards where participants shared their favourite memories from CEP and their vision what organizers should improve next semester.
Of course this project would not be possible if CEP did not have an organizer team - big thank to you and best wishes for this CEP 2015 spring semester org team - Ieva Marija Rūme (the leader), Zelma Sergejeva, Irina Šahova, Lelde Guste, Zane Kalniņa, Sanda Ziņģe, Nadīna Rode, Toms Akmens and Andis Draguns.
But the task for organizers would not be so easy without support - we can only say the best to “Fazer” for tasty bread and chocolate snacks, to “Možums” for tea, to “Latvijas Valsts meži” for paper cups and plates, to restaurant/beauty studio “Kombucha” for 2 invitations to bikram yoga classes, thanks to our supporters for giving 4 invitations to a hockey game, to folk club “Ala” for giving a discount at every official meeting’s afterparty, to “Dāvanu serviss” for gift cards for kayaking with “Lūzumpunkts”, to “Cita Rota” for amazing handmade scarf with Latvian symbols, to “Escape Room” for invitations to challenging tasks, Ģertrūdes ielas theatre for invitations and of course thanks to “Ogres estrāde” for 2 tickets to singer Timati concert! It is special thank you to Students’ Council of the University of Latvia for letting this event happen!
And so CEP 2015
th spring has ended - a lot has been done and learnt, but we all will keep good memories in our hearts. Hopefully till next semester, when a new team and adventures will come.
