University of Latvia (UL) has developed the first Ayurveda professional development course in Northern Europe, held in Latvian and English, and the first students are to be admitted as soon as February 2015. The new further education programme is managed by one of the leading Latvian endocrinologists, prof. Valdis Pīrāgs, and will be carried out in collaboration with one of the leading Ayurvedic education and research institutions in India.

“The founding of a professional education programme in Ayurvedic medicine will greatly enrich the variety of knowledge possessed by healthcare professionals and expand their perception of the world, thus following the World Health Organisation’s 2009 resolution regarding the necessity to integrate traditional medicine into national healthcare systems around the world by developing new procedures in education, accreditation and licensing. Educating Western healthcare professionals and the general public about these complementary methods of treatment will result in a deeper understanding and less prejudice,” says prof. V. Pīrāgs. UL and Arya Vaidya Chikitsalayam Clinic & Research Institute (AVP), one of the biggest Ayurvedic therapy and research institutions in Southern India, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the intent on mutual cooperation and developed a 160-hour further education course in basic Ayurveda. The course curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the basic Ayurveda history, philosophy, pathophysiology, pharmacology and diagnostic principles. The programme will focus on Ayurvedic therapy, with the opportunity to gain practical experience during post-graduate internship in India. The programme is intended for healthcare professionals with higher education, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists, pharmacologists and other persons with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nutritional sciences, pharmacy, pharmacology or biology, who would like to extend their professional knowledge. The course will be taught by experienced lecturers from UL and from AVP, India. Tuition fee for the course is 950 euro. More information
