“We are pleased that this year UL ranks 401-500th in the world in THE Arts and Humanities Rankings. Strengthening the humanities is one of the missions of UL, and this achievement proves that the chosen direction is correct. The investments accomplished by UL in the quality of studies and research, and international cooperation have resulted in the targeted development of the field of sciences and increasing international competitiveness,” emphasizes the Rector of UL, Prof. Gundars Bērziņš.
UL is ranked in a total of seven of the 11 THE subject areas in the 2026 rankings: Arts and Humanities, Education Studies, Medical and Health Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Computer Science. In Education Studies, UL maintains its 501st–600th position. Medical and Health, Life and Social Sciences at UL are ranked 601st–800th. Physical Sciences (physics, chemistry, etc.) and Computer Sciences ranked 801st–1000th.
THE Rankings by Subject offer a detailed assessment of universities’ performance in subject areas, based on criteria such as teaching, research environment, research quality, citation impact, collaboration with industry and international outlook. The methodology for each subject area is tailored to the specifics thereof, ensuring an objective and comparable assessment on a global scale. THE Rankings serve as a reliable benchmark for students, academia and industry, helping to identify centres of excellence and promoting international collaboration.
