The University of Latvia (UL), endorsing its position and competitiveness in the international context, has maintained its place in the TOP 1001–1200 in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, while rising in the positions of research environment and international outlook. The results show that the strategic choices of UL stimulate long-term growth even in conditions of increased global competition.
THE World University Rankings provide university assessment in five main dimensions – teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook.
UL has advanced in the ranking of research environment, moving up from 537th to 473rd place in the world compared to the previous year. This reflects a consistent institutional infrastructure, a successful postdoctoral policy, as well as implementation of intensive international research projects, which is also included in assessment of the international outlook. The increase in this assessment indicates the consistently active development of international partnerships. A slight rise is also observed in the ranking of teaching, which indicates a healthy enhancement of research-based studies.
“Ascent in the assessment of research environment confirms that our approach – to strengthen the research support system in order to facilitate rising external funding for research, improve visibility in the international environment, and integrate or create international research networks – is bearing fruit. We see clear progress, and this also provides a basis for growth in the coming years,” emphasizes Guntars Kitenbergs, UL Vice-Rector for Research.
The 2025 ranking includes a total of 2091 world universities. Latvia is represented by four higher education institutions – UL and Riga Technical University in the group 1001–1200, Riga Stradiņš University in the group 1201–1500, and Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies in the group 1500+.
With these results, UL affirms the leading position in research and higher education in Latvia, as well as its ability to compete in the international arena. In the coming years, the University’s strategic goals foresee improving the quality of research, expanding international cooperation and innovation transfer to industry.
