The Soviet occupation system has left a lasting impression on the history of many Eastern and Central European countries. Latvia, as one of the Baltic republics, formed part of the Soviet Union's western border and was subject to Soviet colonization. The social sciences, including ethnology (then called ethnography), were part of the system for implementing Soviet ideology. The consequences of this are still felt in many areas of life; therefore, the development of modern society can be viewed through the prism of postcolonialism.
