The ECOO accreditation framework constitutes an internationally recognised benchmark of excellence designed to harmonise and strengthen the quality of optometric education throughout Europe. The granting of full accreditation confirms that the content of UL’s optometry programmes, the quality of clinical training, and the development of students’ professional competencies are fully aligned with internationally acknowledged best practice. To date, only six higher education institutions in Europe have this distinction. UL is now the first - and at present the only - university to provide EDO-accredited optometry education in the English language.
Tatjana Pladere, Head of the Department of Optometry and Vision Science at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Latvia, comments: “The awarding of European accreditation represents a significant milestone for our entire optometric community. It affirms our position as leaders in primary eye care and demonstrates that the quality of optometry education at UL meets the highest international standards. This recognition reflects the collective dedication, expertise, and sustained efforts of our community. We take great pride in our staff, students, alumni, collaboration partners, and supporters. Through purposeful and persistent cooperation, we continue to achieve excellence at the highest level."
Going forward, graduates who successfully complete the Bachelor’s study programme "Optometry" and the professional Master’s study programme "Clinical Optometry", while also fulfilling additional EDO requirements within two years following graduation, will be awarded the European Diploma in Optometry and become part of the international EDO alumni network. More broadly, the European accreditation offers substantial benefits to students and graduates alike, enhancing international recognition, fostering academic and professional exchange, and expanding opportunities for professional mobility across Europe.
We take great pride in the achievements of the Department of Optometry and Vision Science at the Faculty of Science and Technology and extend our warmest congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment.
