History of Asian Technology, Science and Art
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide students of the a master 's level in humanities with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of Asian technology, the history of science and the arts, its historical development and specific aspects. The course provides insight and basic knowledge of science and technology in the Middle and Far East. The aim of the first part is to study Western clichés on Chinese science, then to focus on the history and development of some proto-sciences in the Far East, mainly alchemy, astronomy, geography and medicine. The basic ideas and concepts about man and his integration into the space of the outside world, about matter and spiritual beings, as well as about public order as a precondition for scientific interests are especially thoroughly analyzed. Students are introduced to the fundamental ideas of Chinese science and the most well-known fields in which Chinese researchers have excelled, especially botany and alchemy (medicine). Depiction of Dynamics of the Epoch in the Art of Early Modern Times
Course
The course deals with the evidence found in pieces of art about structural manifestation and dynamics of early modern times. The course deals with monuments of art of the 16th – 18th centuries as a source of research of society structure, political and economic systems, every day life and personality. The course concentrates on the phenomena, characteristic to early modern times that are most closely connected with processes of modernization, typical to the epoch.

French literature and art (XX-XXI centuries)

The course provides knowledge in the field of French literature and culture of the XX - XXI centuries, allows students to orientate in the main moments of the history of French literature and art of this period, as well as in the main issues and challenges of that time. The course includes works of literature, painting, cinema and theater, which are acquired both from a theoretical point of view and through direct acquaintance with texts, works and their analysis. An important part of the course are creative workshops, which allow students to gain insight into the authors' themes and stylistics using their creativity. The aim of the course is to provide students with the necessary knowledge to orientate in the main directions of literature and art of the 20th - 21st century in France, to provide skills to apply literary and semiotic analysis to contemporary texts, as well as to develop students' creative abilities in writing literary texts in French. The aims of the course are 1) to acquaint students with the development of French literature and art from the 17th to the 19th century, 2) to look at the most important movement in French literature, visual arts, music and architecture, linking it with the cultural environment of the period. Tasks: • to form an idea of the main stages of the formation of French literature and art, • to teach to perceive the processes taking place in literature and art in the broad context of cultural history, • to present the French writers' works, which have a world cultural value and the facts of the interaction between French and Latvian culture.
The language of instruction is French.

The aim of the course To improve the competence of a future teacher to provide the pre-school student's cultural understanding and development of the transversal skills in the process or learning. The Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia (ILFAUL) is a research organisation conducting internationally recognised studies in three fields: literary criticism, folklore studies and arts. The ILFAUL is also one of Latvian research institutions, which strategically develops and promotes research in digital humanities, actively maintains a dialogue between the humanities and cultural heritage industries. Scientific staff of the ILFAUL is involved in local and international research networks and associations, as well as working on their boards in certain cases. In 2012–2018, researchers participated in 37 international research projects, resulting in 120 international scientific publications.
