“LATVIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE SUMMER SCHOOL 2022”

For Ukrainian students, lecturers, researchers

without prior knowledge and with slight (A1+) prior knowledge of the Latvian language

27 July – 9 August 2022 from 15:30 o’clock

The University of Latvia (UL) in cooperation with the charity organisation Ziedot.lv and the UL Foundation organizes a “Latvian Language and Culture Summer School” for Ukrainian students, lecturers and researchers to offer an opportunity to acquire and improve their Latvian language skills and expand their knowledge of Latvian history, art and folklore.

We offer:

  • intensive, modern and interactive Latvian language course (grammar, reading, writing, everyday speech, 64 acad. hours), including topics like human personality, experience, knowledge and skills, friendly acquaintance and stay in Latvia, daily vocabulary, versatile and unique Riga, getting to know the city and finding one’s way in it, everyday life and holidays of Latvian residents, Latvian traditional and modern culture, Latvian news in the media, success stories of Latvia and Latvians in the world;
  • a lecture on the history and politics of Latvia, – introduction to the modern history of Latvia and the political situation in Latvia;
  • a lecture on Latvian culture and art, – introduction to its historical development and the most notable personalities, especially in visual art and architecture;
  • a lecture on Latvian folklore, – traditions and customs, introduction to one of the most interesting forms of folklore – Latvian folk songs or dainas, deciphering, singing and dancing them;
  • online tours of Riga, including visits to several museums of the city (e.g., Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, or Occupation Museum, National Museum of Art, Rainis and Aspazija House in Riga, Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, Kr. Barons Museum).

4 credit points (6 ECTS) will be awarded for successful completion of the course.

  • Continuation of studies in UL study programmes for Ukrainian refugees
    Issues related to the admission of new international students from Ukraine and on opportunity for students who have left their studies in Ukraine to continue their studies at the University of Latvia, please turn to studentu.serviss@lu.lv or +371 67034444
    Ukrainian students and researchers will be able to continue their studies and research in Latvia with the opportunity to receive state-funded scholarships and paid internships. More information: https://www.viaa.gov.lv/en/ukraine-latvia
    Applications for state support mechanism for the Civilians of Ukraine should be submitted through Latvian higher education and scientific institutions. Individual applications will not be accepted.
  • All Ukrainian students are subject to a 100% reduction in tuition fees during the 2022 spring semester.

Psychological counselling for UL students and staff:

  • UL psychologist Līga Valinka offers free of charge counselling.

    Consultations are available both in-person (at Raiņa bulvāris 19, room 107), and online. Currently, priority registration is ensured for Ukrainian citizens.
