Plant Molecular Genetics
Course
The aim of the course “Plant molecular genetics” is to provide the master of biology programme students of the Faculty of Biology with a deeper insight into modern plant genetics and biotechnology. The course will emphasize the role of plants as model organisms to understand fundamental laws and mechanisms in genetics and evolution. Molecular marker technologies for basic research and plant breeding will be introduced. Students will get acquainted with the latest achievements in plant molecular genetics and biotechnology, including methods for constructing transgenic (genetically modified) plants. Role of GM plants in basic research and agriculture will be discussed with emphasis on GMO regulations in European Union and Latvia.

The course is designed to develop students oral and written English skills in the field of business management The tasks of the course are: 1. to prepare students for oral and written business communication in an unternational environment. 2. to help students acquire terminology related to the chosen speciality. The course covers such topics as legal forms of organization, raising finance, financial stability, and basic laws of marketing. Students discuss problems of international marketing and commerce as well as intercultural communication issues.The skills and terminology acquired during the lessons are complemented by individual reading and writing academic annotations on professional topics. Students knowledge and skills are assessed with the help of three tests and a presentation about international commerce. The course has been designed for all speciality students of the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics. The language of instruction-is English.

Practical Training in Financial Accounting
Course
The aim of the practice is to strengthen theoretical knowledge acquired in the training process in financial accounting, so that practical skills can be gained in recording and collecting information on business transactions, as well as to gain a realistic picture of the annual accounts and the establishment of tax reports binding on the company. The tasks to be performed for the achievement of the objective shall be detailed in the by-law of practice; in general case, the main tasks shall be related to the determination of the procedures for the registration of specific inventory objects in the internship and the conformity assessment thereof in relation to the requirements of regulatory enactments. The practice rules are available on the faculty website in the section for Students - Methodological instructions. The practice assessment amounts to 80%, while the practice report estimates 20% of the 10 KP. The language of the practice is Latvian, unless the practice company uses

The decision on exclusion of a person from the list of students may be contested in accordance with the procedures specified in Section 26, Paragraph eight of this Law. The student is exmatriculated with rector’s order, following the proposal of the dean representing the respective faculty. The student who wishes to be exmatriculated submits an application to the rector. The student can contest the exmatriculation decision within one month from the day when the decision has entered into force, by submitting an application to the UL Senate.

The Library of the University holds a valuable collection of books published by “Zelta Ābele” (“Golden Apple-tree”), the publishing house of Miķelis Goppers. Mikelis Goppers was born on June 13, 1908, into the family of General Kārlis Goppers, he attended Riga City Gymnasium No.1 and then studied at the Faculty of Economics and Law of the University of Latvia. In 1935 M. Goppers, a great devotee of books, founded a publishing house and gave it a symbolic name from the Latvian folklore - “Golden Apple-tree”. The main idea was to publish books of a high quality design and polygraphy. The creator of the publisher’s logo was Voldemārs Krastiņš (1908-1960), a landscape painter and a master of etching and one of the first illustrators of the publishing house. For the work at his publishing house M.
