Introduction to the Anthropology of Art
Course
In this course, students will explore how anthropology and anthropologists have approached the study of the arts and artists. The course takes a broad approach to the arts, by engaging with the material arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, media) and performing arts (dance, theater, music). The aim of course to promote understanding for students - how the arts are seen as an expression of culture and society – the ways in which they are manifestations of political, personal, and public discourses. Special attention will be paid to how the arts and artists engage (and interact) with the concepts of Tasks of course are to gain a better understanding of the theoretical constructs of representation, social structure, meaning, function, imagination, and identity and to use thees knowledge in research practice. The languages of instruction are Latvian and English.

The course “Literature in the Context of Totalitarian Art” will give students a deeper understanding of the common and different features of art, especially literature, in the USSR and Germany. The course discusses the creation of the canon of socialist realism, its peculiarities and development. Literary works typical to Nazi and soviet time are analysed.

The course offers a very well structured vision of the aspects of the historical development of Spanish Literature from the medieval period. The literature is analyzed in relation to the main trends in art. The course takes into account the knowledge B1/B2 level of our students, and that is why a selection of linguistically suitable texts has been made in order to introduce a broad overview of the cultural historical contents and the most representative authors of each period covering both the cultural space of Spain and partially of Latin America (from medieval times to the present day). The objective of the course is to offer the student an opportunity to get closer to the literary trends of the Hispanic world during the different periods and to learn to analyze the different literary genres and to know how to express their opinions in this regard. Theory of Art Systems Development
Course
The course aim is to teach students the systems thinking art as well to develop their skills to define and predict rising contradictions. Students are taught to define possible resources systemically and to be able to use them for the decision of art problems, to descry and apply in practice regularity of the arts development in order to systemic and integrated assessment of the state of art systems as well as for scientifically proved predictions of the further development of ones. The course shows basic principles of the research work in the arts.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the problems of philosophy of art. The course introduces the main concepts of philosophy of art that people encounter on a daily basis. Tasks of the study course: 1. To explain general views on specific issues of philosophy of art; 2. A work of art is a testimony of an era. It encapsulates the mindset, the system of values, the sentiment and topicalities of life that were important in the society at the moment of creation of the work of art. Iconographic and iconological research methods allow for this information to be read. The heritage of the Early Modern Period art (especially painting) provides us with abundant and detailed information about this historical period. Course goal is to gain an understanding of iconographic analysis options.
