Aesthetics: from theory of sensibility to philosophy of art

The aim of the course is to introduce philosophical aesthetics, respecting the diversity of its perspectives and approaches. The course objectives include: 1. providing a periodisation of aesthetic thought in the world and in Latvia, 2. explaining the background of the aesthetics as a philosophical discipline and its emergence in the 18th century, 3. discussing the relationship between aesthetics, philosophy of art and art history, 4. analysing the basic categories of aesthetics, examining authorship and creativity, 4. outlining the current trends in the field of aesthetics. The course is taught in Latvian.

History of Technologies, Science and Art in Asia
Course
The course provides students with the basic knowledge of the history of science and technology in the Middle East and East Asia. In the first part students will be introduced into Western clichés concerning Chinese science, later several of the major proto-sciences of the Far Eastern civilizations will be introduced and discussed, namely alchemy, astronomy, geography and medicine. Special attention will be devoted to the basic ideas of human integration into environment, the material and the spiritual and to the society as agent of scientific interest. The student is enabled to understand fundamental ideas of Chinese science and some of the most important Chinese branches of science, where Chinese scientists have attained excellent results, especially botanic and alchemy (medicine). Anete Karlsone For the first time since the restoration of independence, the implementation of the project will provide a scientific evaluation of the field of ethnology during the Soviet period and promote public understanding of the system of knowledge formation, dissemination and control implemented in the Soviet totalitarian regime, as well as the role of ethnography and art in uniting society and creating a common identity. By researching archival documents and other written sources of history, combined with interviews of Soviet period eyewitnesses and respondents of younger generations, the creation of ethnological knowledge and its use both for the purposes of Soviet ideology and as a resource for strengthening national identity under colonialism will be investigated. The project's activities will contribute to the public

The aim of the study course is to acquire competence in sculpting and to master basic techniques of sculpture. The tasks are to discuss the types of spatial art and the genres of sculpture, to acquaint with different materials and techniques of sculpture and to analyse means of expression, to determine the working stages of relief and round sculpture, to investigate the traditions and the principles of form building of three dimensional art of various cultures; to elaborate art expression while working in a workshop and doing home assignments. The languages of instruction are Latvian and English

The course is based on a chronological principle, emphasizing the achievements of 20th and 21st centuries. It provides theoretical lectures, workshops and practical and independent work, which includes studying the history of material culture - learning about the scientific and technical discoveries and achievements, researching innovations and researching their impact on graphic design and related industries. The development of critical analysis skills will give students an idea of the diverse forms of expression (genres) in the graphic design industry and their relationship with different sectors of the economy

The purpose of this course is to introduce students into the field of aesthetic problems. The course reveals the essential aesthetic notions one has to face on the daily basis. The function of art in society human life is addressed to in detail; namely, how one perceives art, and how what influence art exerts on individuals. The aesthetic problems are related to those of art pedagogy and art psychology. The function of the aesthetic phenomena in an individual’s general and humanitarian culture is revealed.
