Comparative Literature and Contemporary Latvian Literature in the European Context
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide students with knowledge about the object of research of comparative literature and its main aspects; the synchronous and diachronic view of national literature in comparison with foreign literature for the study of literature in its context (culture and music, literature and fine arts, literature and philosophy, literature and religion, etc.); on the history of the development of comparative literary studies in the world and in Latvia. The course pays special attention to the tendencies of the latest Latvian literature in the context of the literature of the Baltics and other European "small" nations, the works of the latest Latvian and foreign literature of the 21st century are analyzed. Tasks of the study course: 1. to study and interpret literary texts; to compare and analyze the interpretations; 2. to develop and improve skills in comparative text analysis. The course is taught in Latvian.

International scientific conference “Literature and Religion”

The conference has been organized (once in two years) at the Department of Latvian and Baltic Studies of the Faculty of Humanities since 2006. Each conference has its own sub-theme, researching the issues in theology, literary studies, religion, literature, art, cinema and music, as well as their interaction. The aim of the study course is to enhance the knowledge of the processes of visual perception in various aspects of neuroscience and psychology, emphasizing the state-of-art trends in the field of perception research with a possible application in the field of optometry.
The objectives of the study course are the following:
  • to provide the knowledge of visual perception in a trans-disciplinary aspect, rooted in biology, psychology, physiology of brain function, with the contribution of computer science;
  • to give skills to apply theoretical and practical knowledge of visual perception in explaining and researching perceptual phenomena;
  • to introduce students to the leading views on the visual perceptual phenomena, trends and recent developments in vision perception among leading research teams worldwide.

Animals in Anthropology

The course offers a socio-anthropological view of human-animal interactions. The aim of the course is to create a broader insight into human-animal relations and social categorization of animals. Students gain insight into the economic, political aspects of human-animal interactions, such as the animal as a resource in science, a source of livelihood, a household member and a companion. The task of the course is to provide a more detailed insight into the issues of animal activism, the basics of the legal regulation related to animals. By getting acquainted with the various symbolic meanings of animals in rituals, art, language and literature, students will recognize the challenges of animal management, the cultural and historical significance of animals, as well as develop research questions using course concepts (anthropomorphism, posthumanism, specieism, domestication).
