The Institute was established in December 2019 by extending basis of the Laboratory of Mathematical Modelling of Environmental and Technological Processes of the University of Latvia. The Institute represents and unites several research groups of the Department of Electrodynamics and Continuum Mechanics of the University of Latvia. The Institute is part of the University of Latvia, Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry.

The aim of the Institute is to promote physics-oriented applied research of environmental processes for the needs of Latvian and European industry, as well as to train highly qualified specialists in the mentioned fields.

The Institute is funded by research projects and programs of the European Union and Latvian Council of Science, international cooperation projects and other industrial clients, as well as state government funds.

Applying knowledge and skills in mathematics, physics and programming, scientists of the Institute of Numerical Modeling works with following problems:
