"Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns" Law Office Scholarship "Contemporary Challenges to the Theory and Practice of Law Enforcement in Latvia"

The scholarship was established in 2014 by the patron, University of Latvia (UL) graduate Māris Vainovskis, who is a partner at the Law Office “Eversheds Sutherland Bitāns” and heads a banking, finance, corporate and commercial practice. The aim of the scholarship is to support capable, diligent and socially active law students of the University of Latvia during their studies, as well as to promote research on the methods of qualitative application of law today. Scholarships are intended for master’s and doctoral students of the UL Faculty of Law jointly with the research supervisor (mentor). Number of scholarships : 1. Scholarship amount: EUR 3000 – to the student, EUR 1000 – to research supervisor (before deduction of taxes). University of Latvia Academic Arbitration Court According to paragraph 34 of the UL Constitution, the Academic Arbitration Court has five members – four representatives of the academic staff and one representative of the Student Council. Academic staff representatives are elected by the UL Constitutional Assembly for its term of office. The student representative is elected by the UL Student Council. Sigurds Lindiņš

Patron Sigurds Lindiņš (1918–2000) was born on 24 January 1918 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Lindiņšfamily returned to Latvia soon after the birth of their son. His father was a politician – a long-time member of the Saeima and for some time also the Minister of Agriculture; he participated in the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia and appears in the picture taken on 18 November 1918 on the stage of the Latvian National Theatre. His mother was a teacher at the Riga English Institute. Sigurds Lindiņš also had two younger siblings – sister and brother. Sigurds Liniņš started his studies at Riga State Primary School, continued at Riga City Gymnasium No. 1, graduated in 1937 and began his studies at the University of Latvia, Faculty of Economics and Law. In 1939 he was called up to the compulsory Latvian military service disrupting his studies. Subsequently, he was forced to serve in both the Red Army and the Latvian Legion, and his family was not spared by the events of the World
