The beginnings of the Faculty can be traced back to 1919, when the faculty of Philology and Philosophy was established at the University of Latvia. As the times and names changed several times, the Faculty of History and Philology and the Faculty of Law and Philosophy were reorganized in 1970, the Faculty of History and Philosophy was established and continuous until nowadays. Currently, the Faculty provides academic studies in history and philosophy and offers higher academic education in three levels of studies – bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral study programmes.

The Library at Raiņa Boulevard holds the historically inherited collection of the Faculty of Economics and Law of the University of Latvia. This historical collection contains mainly printed matter from the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, but it also includes rare editions dating back to the 17th and 18th century. The collection, which is made up of almost 5,000 items, contains books in various languages, including Latin, French, German, Latvian and Russian. The work on forming the Faculty of Economics and Law was started in 1919 and the origin of the library dates to 1923, with the acquisition of the library of professor Eugen v. Bergmann. Later the Library was stocked up with books from the private libraries of cooperator Vilis Siliņš, docent Hermanis Albats and professor Alexander Bumanis. The founder of the scholarship is a patron, Australian Latvian Eigits Dāvis Timermanis. The scholarship aims to support outstanding researchers who carry out economically relevant research in social sciences, which contributes to competitiveness in the broadest sense of the term. The scholarship is intended for the University of Latvia (UL) doctoral students in social sciences and doctoral degree applicants in social sciences who study at the UL Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Business, Management and Economics, and Faculty of Law. Father of the philantrophist John Golde – Tenis Golde (1907–1952); The grandather of the philantrophist John Golde – Tenis Golde (1869–1949). John Golde (1931) was born in Latvia. J.Golde's grandfather and father both graduated from the University of Latvia, Faculty of Law. After deportation of relatives to Siberia by the occupation powers, he went into exile to the United States, where he studied marketing and project management. Currently works as an Internet project consultant, marketing and sales specialist. Author of two books. The patron supports the University of Latvia in memory of his grandfather, 1931 graduate of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, Tenis Golde (1869–1949), who until his deportation to Siberia in 1949 worked as a lawyer in Riga and Rūjiena, as well as to commemorate his father, Tenis Golde (1907–1952). Master Thesis II is self-dependent research. The aim in preparing the Master’s thesis II is to strengthen theoretical knowledge and academic skills in the area of the law, developing them in accordance with the requirements of a BA in law or a second-level professional education in law, as well as of the master’s degree study programme, also preparing the student for scholarly research work and for pursuit of a doctorate. The Master’s thesis II satisfies the requirements of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia vis-à-vis the successful defence of the thesis, including the preparation of a working plan, identification of the necessary sources of information, and the writing, editing and defending of the thesis. The entire grade in this course is based on a successful defence of the master’s thesis in front of the Final Examination Commission, as confirmed by the council of the University of Latvia Faculty of Law.
