Course
A work of art is a testimony of an era. It encapsulates the mindset, the system of values, the sentiment and topicalities of life that were important in the society at the moment of creation of the work of art. Iconographic and iconological research methods allow for this information to be read. The heritage of the Early Modern Period art (especially painting) provides us with abundant and detailed information about this historical period. Course goal is to gain an understanding of iconographic analysis options. Learning Objectives: 1. Learn iconographic method; 2. Use iconographic method in analysis of the historical source 3. Theory of Stryles and Structures of Art and Architecture
Course
The course consists of the three thematic groups: (1) Theory of styles of art and architecture, (2) Theory of the contemporary problematic of cultural heritage, and (3) Theory of visual structures and colours, united by common aims and objectives, common description of knowledge, skills, and competences, a common final exam and common tasks of student’s independent work. The role of the course in the study programme is to create a fundamental understanding on the classification of the styles of visual art, the concept of a style, the principles and systems of visual composition, including the colour theory concepts, also providing insight to the local (Latvia’s) and global problematic on preservation and condition of cultural heritage in the contemporary world. The acquisition of the course content is addressed to the development of the evaluation skills of historical, thematical, and formal analysis of the environmental objects and artefacts. History of Japanese Art
Course
The course will give introduction to the history of Japanese art, beginning with the prehistorical period till the middle of the 20th century.. A brief account of each period's characteristical artworks and artists will help students to understand the course of development of the Japanese arts and give an outline of Japanese aesthetics.

Art and literature in China
Course
This course is an introduction to the traditional arts and literary genres in China, focussing on forms, motifs and their formation in the context of cultural history. Poetry, prose and painting will be investigated and explained as main fields of Chinese cultural history. Their historical development and social meaning in traditional China will be in the center of our work, however, regarding the effects of economic and social changes we will consider also the meaning of traditional arts and literature and various modes of reinvention of tradition in contemporary China's social and medial environment.. The course is departed into thematic sections. In the intermediary parts called "repetition" the participants must get prepared on discussions about the previous topics conducted by themselves.

English I Oral Communication
Course
The aim of the course is to facilitate art students’ English for Specific Purposes acquisition, focusing on the development and reinforcement of spoken communication skills. The students taking the course participate in the discussions about the role of art in the modern global context, the impact of history and culture on modern art movements as well as about the design development process. The students are introduced to the use of Business English at meetings and make presentations about the selected professional themes. The course objectives are to develop the students’ general and business communication skills and to improve English vocabulary pertaining to art and design. The course is delivered in English and Latvian.

Course
The aim of the course is to explore the concepts of contemporary art. The students will analyse multimedia expressive means, master conceptualization in art as well as art documentation in photo series, will develop conceptual projects and spatial objects. The students will realize art action. The course provides for the discussion of graphic design, book design, graphical symbols. The students will create letter and image compositions, make posters, book design and illustrations, experiment with various techniques and materials of graphic design.

English II Reading and terminology

The aim of the course is to prepare the students for reading professional literature and communication in English as well as to develop the students’ skills to apply the obtained information about art movements and understanding of the interaction between text and the visual arts practically, integrating their knowledge in the professional activity. Objectives: to promote professional terminology acquisition, to facilitate the development of the students' reading skills, to introduce reading techniques and core reading comprehension strategies and to promote the students’ skills to apply the language in the professional environment. The course is delivered in English and Latvian.

Culture and Art in Latvia, the End of the 19 th. Century - 1945

Course covers the main tendencies of the development of art and culture in Europe at the end of the 19 th century - the first four decades of the 20 th century and the expression of these tendencies - specially, modernism, in Latvia. Attention is paid to the birth of national and modern art in Latvia, specially - at the age of neoromantic modernism in 1890 - 1914 and classical modernism. Modern tendencies in Latvian literature are covered, as well as development in music, architecture - including - monumental, cinema, in music; also - in city planning; the life of the main architects are covered, too. Great attention is paid to the impact of politic life on art and culture during K. Ulmanis authoritarian dictatorship , the first year of soviet occupation in 1940 - 41 and the period of German occupation in 1941 - 1945 and the life of the main artists during these periods (A. History of Asian Technology, Science and Art
Course
The aim of the study course is to provide students of the a master 's level in humanities with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of Asian technology, the history of science and the arts, its historical development and specific aspects. The course provides insight and basic knowledge of science and technology in the Middle and Far East. The aim of the first part is to study Western clichés on Chinese science, then to focus on the history and development of some proto-sciences in the Far East, mainly alchemy, astronomy, geography and medicine. The basic ideas and concepts about man and his integration into the space of the outside world, about matter and spiritual beings, as well as about public order as a precondition for scientific interests are especially thoroughly analyzed. Students are introduced to the fundamental ideas of Chinese science and the most well-known fields in which Chinese researchers have excelled, especially botany and alchemy (medicine).
