Theoretical analysis of works of art and acquaintance with various problems of art science will supplement the previously gained experience of interacting with works of visual art and will allow to formulate a personal attitude. Tasks: to learn professional terminology and use it in writing reviews. To perform creative and original analysis of works of art and gain motivation for further art research. To improve the understanding of historical art styles. The language of instruction is Latvian.

The aim of the course is to increase knowledge, skills and competence in visual arts and architecture 19th to 21th centuries of history and theory. A non-traditional approach to various problems of art theory will help to specify the previously gained experience and to formulate more precisely the personal attitude. Tasks: to apply the knowledge acquired in the previous semester (MākZPA58) in a wide range of Western European art research; theoretically and practically analyze and get acquainted with 19th to 21th centuries of visual art; to formulate personal attitude; to perform creative and original analysis of contemporary works of art in independent work; to improve the understanding of the forms of contemporary art expression. The course offers to explore the connection between society and art, drawing attention to various issues in the field of sociology, for example, inequality, education, family, race, social class, sex and gender, religion, sexuality and political economy (power discourse). The goal of the course of the facilitate the understanding of sociology as science and it research field, drawing attention to the connection between the discipline and art and design. Over the course, the interaction between society and an individual, group formation and socialization practices, as well as the impact of art on the change of behavioral models will be explored. Certain attention will be drawn to the issues of Otherness based on sexuality, race, ethnic belonging, gender and subcultures. Anthropology of Art
Course
In this course, students will explore how anthropology and anthropologists have approached the study of the arts and artists. The course takes a broad approach to the arts, by engaging with the material arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, media) and performing arts (dance, theater, music). Students will gain an understanding of how the arts are seen as an expression of culture and society – the ways in which they are manifestations of political, personal, and public discourses. Special attention will be paid to how the arts and artists engage (and interact) with the concepts of ‘community’ and ‘identity’ – particularly through the works of alternative arts organizations both in Latvia and abroad. Students will gain a better understanding of the theoretical constructs of representation, social structure, meaning, function, kinesthetic imagination, and identity.

The course provides an insight into the history of Francophone literature and art. It presents a wide range of cultures in countries around the world where the French language and culture are commonplace for locals. Students are offered the opportunity to acquire knowledge of literature and art in French-speaking countries. The offered literature and art study course includes the best representatives of literature and art from African and Arab countries, from the Pacific Islands, from Southeast Asia, from North America and Europe. The course introduces various literary typologies of Francophonie, which in turn help to identify the difference between concepts such as "French literature", "Literature in French" and "Francophone literature". The choice of texts and authors is based on linguistic, spatial and cultural principles, which reflect the dialectical unity of the Francophone area, as well as linguistic and cultural diversity. The aim of the course is to develop a basic knowledge of the art of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance Art and Architecture in Europe and to create an understanding of the importance of this period art in the development of later art and architecture styles and movements. The task of the course is to promote the skills to analyze the historical aspects of Western fine arts and architecture and form the basis for the acquisition of competence in the field chosen by each student.
