The Bachelor’s Programme in Mathematics provides high-quality academic education in the field of mathematical sciences.

Students gain strong theoretical knowledge alongside essential research skills, creating a solid foundation for professional careers.

The programme develops analytical and scientific thinking, fostering the ability to approach complex problems independently and systematically.

At the same time, it prepares graduates for further studies and advanced research at the Master’s and doctoral level.

The bachelor’s study programme “Mathematics” provides basic knowledge in the fundamental sub-branches of mathematical science for practical applications of mathematics in current sub-branches. Equal attention is paid to the theoretical aspects of mathematics and the practical application of the acquired skills and abilities. The interaction of theory and practice is facilitated by several seminars, course papers and bachelor's theses.

The part A – mandatory part of the study programme requires acquisition of courses in the amount of 91 credit points. The part B – limited elective part – in the amount of 60 credit points, while the part C – free elective part – in the amount of 9 credit points. The study courses to be acquired in part A are Programming and Computers, Algebra, Analytical Geometry, Elements of Mathematical Logic and Set Theory, Mathematical Analysis, Differential Equations, Numerical Methods, Mathematical Statistics, Complex Variable Function Theory, Probability Theory.

The programme provides the necessary academic knowledge base for training highly qualified professionals in the applications of mathematics in the national economy (mathematical modelling, mathematical statistics), science and the provision of mathematical education at all levels. The aim of the programme is to prepare specialists capable of independent and creative mastering of the latest achievements in mathematical science and applying them effectively in practice.

The graduates holding the bachelor's degree in mathematics are prepared for studies in mathematics master's study programmes at the universities in Latvia, as well as other EU countries. The study programme also offers its graduates the opportunity to continue their master's studies in the fields of science requiring qualified mathematical knowledge, and thereby a chance to contribute to the development of these fields of science. Holders of the bachelor's degree in mathematics also receive immediate employment offers from companies for the positions of analysts or researchers.

Alumni review

Mathematics helps us recognise patterns in the world around us and understand the processes behind them. Studying mathematics creates strong career prospects and the potential for a well-paid, stable future — provided you are ready to invest effort and dedication. For me, it began with curiosity and a desire to explore. I knew I wanted to pursue science, even if I did not yet know the exact path. A Bachelor’s degree was the first essential step. Importantly, research is only one option. Graduates work as teachers, data analysts, and specialists in institutions such as the State Treasury and the Bank of Latvia. The opportunities are broad and diverse. Most valuable of all was developing the mathematical way of thinking — and the feeling of being exactly where I belonged.
