Today, the study of Asian languages and cultures represents a forward-looking perspective, as the world’s fastest-growing economies are concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region, while the Middle East remains a complex hub of political processes and international cooperation. As Latvia increasingly engages in global trade and diplomacy, it is essential to develop a deep understanding of the languages, socio-political contexts, and cultural environments of these regions, as well as to foster intercultural dialogue. These goals are realized by the Department of Asian Studies, which offers a Bachelor’s programme in “Asian and Intercultural Studies” and a Master’s programme in “Asian Studies.” The department includes centres for Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African studies. Students can apply for exchange studies in the spring semester until September 29, 2023, but for exchange studies in the autumn semester – from the beginning of February till 10 February. When choosing a university, one of the most important criteria is language in which the study courses are offered. You need to be sure that your studies at a foreign university of your choice, and, in particular, the courses that interest you, are taught in the language you speak. To participate in Erasmus student exchange, you must meet the following basic selection criteria: you can prove good knowledge of a foreign language; you have clear justification for studying at a foreign university; you have not previously used more than 12 months of Erasmus+ mobility (studies or internship) at any of these study levels: bachelor's, master's, doctoral level; you have successfully completed at least the first year of study at the undergraduate level; at the time of application you

The patron Pēteris A. Alunāns (1947) was born in a Latvian refugee camp in Bad Rehburg, Germany. In 1950, the Alunāns family entered the United States. There, P. A. Alunāns obtained a master's degree in biology and German philology, became engaged in professional photography, and actively participated in American Latvian public life. In 2001, in honour of the memory of his father Aleksandrs and implementing his idea, Pēteris and his son established the Alunāns Family Scholarship to support those whose lives are the hardest – orphans and those without parental support, and who have decided to study, surmounting difficulties. Pēteris A. Alunāns with a great interest listens to the intentions and directions of activities of students and young specialists with a true delight in their achievements and successes. Patron Imants Freibergs (1934) was born in Valmiera. In 1944, he emigrated to Germany with his family. Subsequently, in 1948, he went to France and finished secondary school there, and in 1954 moved to Canada. Since 1999, I.Freibergs has lived permanently in Latvia. In Toronto University he obtained a master’s degree in engineering. There he met his future wife Vaira Vīķe, while jointly working for the Steering Committee of the First Latvian Youth Festival. In 1961, I. Freibergs joined the company IBM in Montreal as a computer specialist and later worked in McGill University, where he received a doctorate in information technology. From 1976 to 1999, he worked as an IT professor in the University of Quebec, Montreal (UQAM), conducting IT study programmes. Since October 1999 he has been an honorary professor of the UQAM.
