The metaphysics of quantum physics
18.05.2021 20:33 Content
Quantum mechanics is a precise mathematical theory of quantum phenomena. It is the cornerstone of physical sciences and the foundation of many modern technologies. At the same time, of all natural sciences, quantum physics is often invoked in declarations about the possible ordering of the world, and is connected to many paradoxical, unfortuately often even absurd and misleading statements. During the lecture we will attempt to separate the smoke from the fire and sketch out as clearly as possible the epistemological framework in which the laws quantum mechanics have been formulated and empirically tested. The empirically uncontested interpretation of causal indeterminism leads to ontological models (for example, "hidden variables"), which are compatible with a large range of metaphysical concepts. This conclusion cuts two ways: on the one hand, it significantly weakens the reductionist, materialist positions and serves as a rich source for philosophical ideas; on the other hand

The empirically observed quantum intedeterminacy leads to ontological models (e.g., "hidden variables"), which are compatible with a large number of metaphysical conceptions. This conclusion is jarring in two ways: one the one hand, it seriously weakens the reductionist position of materialism and serves as a rich inspiration for many philosophical speculations; on the other hand it provokes many unfounded appeals to quantum physics in discussions of spiritual topics. project, in which we model defects in scintillator materials. Scintillators emit light by absorbing ionizing radiation, which allows the use of such substances in various radiation detectors. This topic is exciting and relevant, and there is a lot to be done in this direction, given that it is a relatively new direction. It is essential to understand that there are projects implemented within the framework of specific financial support, but then there are themes and ideas unrelated to specific project programs. Not all ideas can be financially supported, but that doesn't mean the ideas are bad. There is this example with the famous material graphene obtained outside of a specific project by Manchester University researchers Professor Sir Andre Geim and Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, who devoted one day a week to playing with interesting topics outside the running projects. And they made a discovery that earned them the Nobel Prize. As for the coincidences, it is a well-known story
