Since 1999, the Faculty of Law has included the provision of legal assistance as apart ofits study programme, overseen by the Centre for Legal Practice and Assistance (the Centre). The course is offered in thesecond year of the Bachelor of Laws programme. Theprincipal aim of the Centre is toprovide studentswith the opportunity togain practical experience during their studies byoffering free legal assistance to low-incomeindividuals. At the start of thecourse’s students receive introductory lectures on the basic principles of the Centre, interviewing techniques, legal ethics, legal research, time management, and other topics. These classes aredelivered by guest lecturers from the Centre, who are often practising lawyersable to bridge theoryand practice and share their work experience. The Centre requires students tomaintain strict discipline, attend lectures and seminars, and submit regular reports. By mid-October, students start meeting clients and working on real cases

for participation in the 46th International Physics Olympiad in Mumbai, India, representing Latvia. The Olympiad will take place in July5-12, 2015. During the event, the lecturers of the University of Latvia participate in the creation and translation of the set of tasks, as well as correct and defend the works of Latvian students. Participation in the World Olympiad is organized by the UL Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Department of Physicsin cooperation with the State Education and Content Center. The support provided to the Olympiad is administered by the ULFoundation. Bronze for Latvian students at the International Physics Olympiad in Mumbai! Univ. of Latvia House of Letters and the Academic Square The UL Academic Square will unite all three new buildings of the University of Latvia – the House of Nature, the House of Science and the House of Letters. A large staircase with about 50 steps will lead to the academic square, which will be a symbol of knowledge. It is planned to build a hydrogen laboratory under the area in the area of approximately 20 m 2 , which will be visible through a glazed wall on the slope of the area. Establishment of the Themis statue in the Univ. of Latvia For five years, a statue of the ancient Greek goddess of justice, Themis, was located in the historic building of the University of Latvia, which is also a shelter to the UL Faculty of Law. The patroness Anna Justīne Čakste-Rollins (1936) was born in Riga. Her grandfather is the first president of the Republic of Latvia Jānis Čakste, the father Konstantīns is a professor at the University of Latvia Faculty of Law. In 1944, together with her mother and sister, Anna Justīne fled to Sweden, and later to the United States, where she resides today. The patroness has been awarded the status of an honorary member of the University of Latvia. "I am particularly gratified to help people to obtain higher education – they are the future of our country. An educated society and enlightened citizens will be able to bring Latvia’s name in the world, creating a brighter future. Education and determination are a way to overcome poverty and deprivation. Until 1 November 2014, the total amount donated is EUR 1,002.86. The purpose of the donation in 2014 is to improve the technical provision of the study programs of the UL Faculty of Law. Until now, the implementation ofthe faculty's study and distance education programs with a visual presentation has not provided high-quality audio accompaniment. Laura Kadile is Doctor of Science in Law (Ph.D.) andresearcher at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Latvia. To date, L.Kadile has gained her experience in legal practice while working for an office of sworn advocates in fields of civil, commercial and administrative law, giving lectures and seminars to the students – future lawyers, doctors. L.Kadile takes an active part in international mobility programs, scientific conferences at the national and international level, as well as prepares and publishes scientific papers. Recent publications cover the legal capacity to act and decision making capacity in Latvian patients’ rights law, the role of the expression of will in legal transactions. Her research activities involve the development of a new legal doctrine in Latvia for fuller protection of patients with limited decision-making capacity.
