Digital Competence in Early Childhood Education

The aim of the study course is to improve the digital competence of future preschool teachers; as well as promote the understanding of the importance of developing children’s digital competence at an early age (3-6 years old) and the skills to develop children's digital competence in preschool. The objectives of the study course: 1. To update future teachers' knowledge about the importance of technology in knowledge construction and the 21st century skill development. 2. To promote the improvement of future teachers' digital competence by analyzing various ways of the development of digital competence and implementing the developed lesson plan for the development of children's digital competence in the preschool learning process. 3. To raise the awareness of the safe use of smart technologies. The language of the course is Latvian.

New tendencies in social theory
Course
The aim of the course is to improve knowledge of doctoral students about newest tendencies in social theory. Course objectives: (i) to develop interdisciplinary skills of doctoral students; (i) to train students in the use and application of theories in doctoral research; (iii) to enhance student skills to creatively develop theories in social research. The course is delivered using various tuition and learning forms: lectures, panel discussions, theoretical workshops, literature reviews, seminars, theoretical tasks, examples of theory application, etc. The course is divided in three sections: 1. Introduction to the contemporary social theory: tendencies and challenges. 2. New directions in social theory. 3. The use of theory in doctoral research. The study course is delivered in Latvian and English.

In the philosophy of the dissertation, the fourth stage envisages the preparation of the first chapter of the dissertation, submission for discussion. To achieve this goal, the following tasks have been set: 1) to ensure that the doctoral thesis in philosophy is an original research on a scientifically topical research topic, the research of which in Latvia and abroad can make an innovative contribution to the solution of philosophical problems by developing the first chapter of the thesis, 2) it is planned to develop the dissertation gradually, focusing on the formulation of the topic, developing the research strategy, learning the latest methods, collecting materials, getting acquainted with the sources and secondary literature, 3) the course envisages the development of a substantiated research and the writing of a part of the dissertation in accordance with the academic standards of the Republic of Latvia. The course is taught in Latvian.

Introduction to the Studies of Educational Sciences
Course
In the course students will learn the main basic concepts, the main pedagogical regularities and basic principles in educational sciences and their sub-sectors. The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge, skills and competencies necessary for successful master's studies in educational sciences. Tasks - 1. To master the basic concepts used in educational sciences, to understand the main pedagogical regularities and basic principles; 2. To improve academic reading and writing skills; 3. To improve communicative skills in the academic environment; 4. To improve the competence to act ethically and responsibly in the academic environment; 5. To create an opportunity to reflect on one's learning process and achieved results, directing the further development of one's knowledge, skills and competences.
The language of instruction is Latvian.

To achieve this goal, the following tasks have been set: 1) to ensure that the third chapter of the dissertation is an original research on a scientifically topical research topic, the research of which in Latvia and abroad can make an innovative contribution to the solution of philosophical problems, 2) the doctoral thesis is planned to be developed gradually, focusing on the formulation of the topic of the third chapter, developing a research strategy, learning the latest methods, collecting materials, getting acquainted with sources and secondary literature, 3) the course envisages the development of a research and the writing of a part of the dissertation in accordance with the academic standards of the Republic of Latvia. The course is taught in Latvian.

Latvian traditional music
Course
The aim of the course is to get acquainted with different aspects of Latvian traditional music, to trace general and local features of traditional singing, to show its place and meaning in the life of Latvian people, and to offer theoretical and practical knowledge about musical instruments and instrumental music-making traditions in Latvia. The course begins with overview of the documentation, study and most important publications of musical folklore. On the basis of traditional terminology and music materials two main types of vocal music – recited and sung songs – are characterized. The study of music materials is based on experimental learning followed by self-reflection combined with information about the functional context – calendar, life-cycle or other traditions – of the music materials.
