The University of Latvia is the first higher education institution in Latvia that, since its foundation in 1919, has provided an opportunity to study law and acquire the knowledge necessary for the legal profession. From the University’s establishment (initially known as the Higher School of Latvia until 1923) until 1944, legal education was provided by the Department of Law, which was part of the Faculty of Economics and Law. The core of the Faculty's teaching staff at that time consisted of the most prominent Latvian lawyers of the time, including Professor Jānis Čakste—who later became the first President of Latvia—Professor Kārlis Dišlers, Professor Vladimirs Bukovskis, Professor Augusts Lebers, and Professor Vasilijs Sinaiskis, among others. Anna Justīne Čakste-Rollins (USA, Arizona) is the granddaughter of Jānis Čakste, the first President of the Republic of Latvia and a Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Latvia, and the daughter of Professor Konstantīns Čakste. Despite his high offices, Jānis Čakste was also active in the field education. He played a significant role in establishing the Faculty of Economics and Law. He was the first lecturer in the Public International Law course. On 14 November 1919, J. Čakste was elected Professor. Konstantīns Čakste graduated the Faculty in 1925. In 1928, he was elected a Junior Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Law and became a popular lecturer among students over the years. In 1931, after defending his habilitation thesis “The Purchase of Rent in Latvia and Abroad”, Čakste became a private assistant professor at the Department of Civil Law at the University of Latvia and, in 1934, an assistant professor. From 1935 onwards, he also lectured

Requirements for scholarship applicants: 1. Average grade in the previous academic year above 7 points (according to the LUIS system). 2. Proposal of the student's research topic, justification of its choice and topicality. The application must substantiate the contribution of the chosen topic to the development of law application theory and practice in a text not exceeding 1000 words. Research results: As a result of the completed research, the student undertakes to prepare a publication in a Latvian or internationally recognized periodical or edition dedicated to legal science, as well as to present the results of the research at an international scientific conference. Choice of research topic: Originality in the choice of topic will be particularly appreciated. Applicants are not restricted to a particular
