Latvian Women Writers

In literature Latvian women entered in the 70-ies of the 19th century. The first of these Latvian writers was a leader in the age of national awakening, the sister of Krišjānis Valdemārs, Marija Medinska-Valdemāre.
Among promising women writers were those expressing the national spirit and strivings Aspazija and Anna Bigadere. The outstanding women writers of novels and short stories were Ivande Kaija and Aīda Niedra, in dramaturgy – Minna Dišlere and Elīna Zālīte, and in poetry – Austra Dāle, Paulīne Bārda, Elza Stērste and Elīna Zālīte.
