The aim of the Professional Bachelor’s Study Programme “Mathematician–Statistician” is to prepare highly qualified specialists in mathematics and statistics for careers in public institutions and the private sector in Latvia.

Graduates are equipped to work in ministries, the Central Statistical Bureau, municipalities, audit firms, insurance and reinsurance companies, banks, and other organisations — either as statistical mathematicians or in other roles requiring systematic, in-depth, mathematically grounded statistical analysis, mathematical modelling, and data-driven forecasting.

The programme develops strong analytical competence, enabling graduates to support strategic decision-making and evidence-based planning across a wide range of industries.

The programme offers the theoretical basis of mathematical courses necessary for successful mastering of the professional specialization courses in mathematics and statistics required for the profession of mathematician statistician. The programme envisages an internship in the volume of 20 credit points, during which the student can apply the theoretical knowledge and practical skills acquired in the study courses in solving real-life, practical tasks, as well as become conversant with the specific features of the profession. The programme also includes general education courses taught at the University of Latvia – Basic Entrepreneurship and Communication Psychology. These courses expand students' horizons both in economics and law issues related to the profession, and in the matters regarding exploration of the world.

Study plan

The degree acquired after graduating the professional bachelor’s study programme “Mathematician Statistician” provides an education equivalent to that offered in other European Union countries and beyond. Thus, by fulfilling the programme requirements, the student acquires professional skills and abilities necessary for the work of a mathematician statistician, as well as academic knowledge in mathematics, which opens an opportunity to continue the studies in the relevant master's programmes.

Alumni review

After graduating from the Mathematics and Statistics programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology, the doors are wide open. The education you receive is recognised and valued across sectors. A degree in mathematics provides an excellent foundation for further studies in economics, computer science, and many other fields. Graduates pursue careers in data science, financial institutions, lending companies, insurance firms as risk analysts or actuaries, and even in accounting. The opportunities are diverse and wide-ranging. Any degree earned at the Faculty of Science and Technology equips students with a strong and adaptable skill set that can easily be complemented with additional expertise. The faculty also offers an especially active student community, which is a significant advantage. Networking opportunities are a major benefit — they often help graduates find jobs, secure internships, and build professional connections for the future. Students frequently collaborate on projects, and senior students actively support those in earlier years, creating a strong sense of community and mutual support.

Employer review

When recruiting staff for the Actuarial Department, students from the University of Latvia’s mathematics programmes are typically among the most suitable candidates. During their studies, they have already encountered advanced theoretical concepts and complex problem-solving, developed an understanding of different solution approaches, and gained practical experience with multiple software tools. In our view, the Professional Bachelor’s Programme “Mathematician–Statistician” includes the key academic foundations required for a statistician, while also offering a broad range of professionally oriented courses delivered by highly qualified academic staff.
