The Viking Age in the Baltic Sea area (lasting from AD 650 until 1100) was period of intensive cultural, economic and military contacts among various ethnic and cultural groups across the sea. Also, social relations and economic models rapidly developed and changed in the region during these centuries, including formation of long-distance trade and early towns, sophistication of social stratification and raise of new social elites as well as early introduction on new religion (Christianity). These transformations can be studied on the basis of various sources, while the archaeological material plays crucial role in many of the discussions related to the transition from prehistory to medieval world in the Northern Europe.
