The research topic includes an interdisciplinary study of multimodal texts in public spaces (e.g., street names, advertisements, tombstone inscriptions) and research into the teaching processes of less commonly taught languages, second languages, and heritage languages. This is done by considering top-down processes (laws, national requirements, control principles, etc.) and bottom-up processes (participants’ language practices, metalinguistic activities, linguistic beliefs and attitudes, etc.). Specific focus is paid on language situation in Latvia and Latvian diaspora in the context of other post-Soviet countries and of “small” language teaching/learning across the world.
