Riga Summer School 2015 concluded with world premieres of three student documentaries about the changes in the neighborhoods of Riga: Market Talks (a film about the famous Riga Central Market), The Old Town of Changes (a film about the heart of medieval Riga) and The Bolshoi Maestro (a film about a shoemaker in Moscow suburb of Riga). The first two films are now available for viewing online, but the third one will be kept on hold for now, as it will try to participate in several student film festival competitions.

The premieres of all three films took place at the closing ceremony of Riga Summer School 2015 at the University of Latvia in Riga, Latvia. Film crews presented their films and challenges during the intense filmmaking during the 8 days of the Summer School. The audience vote determined its favorite, and The Bolshoi Maestro won by a landslide. The main topic of Riga Summer School in 2015 was “Change in Riga”. Students from the Netherlands, Romania, Kyrgizstan, Russia, Italy, Spain, Germany, Ukraine and Latvia researched and worked on their short films, trying to capture what and how has changed in these neigborhoods over time. In all five years of the Riga Summer School, the participants have produced total of 28 short films and clips about various parts of Riga. Riga Summer School is a hands-on documentary filmmaking program for international jouralism, media and film students, organized jointly by the faculty and students of the Department of Communication Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Latvia. Next year it will take place in early August and focus on social memory and diverse identities. Market Talks is a short film about Riga’s biggest market – the Central Market, located in the heart of the city. It explores how the market has changed over the past decades. The focus of the documentary is to show hidden places such as the railroad above the market and 2 hectares of underground space.

THE OLD TOWN OF CHANGES
After the events of the World War II the Old Town of Riga changed drastically: houses were removed, new things were built. But, have we ever taken into account the influence that these changes had on the people who lived in the Old Town all those years? Did they stay the same? Can/should they move forward or is it possible to live in the shadow of the past?
