UL Rector Mārcis Auziņš opened the meeting with a report on the last year’s results and achievements which was then followed by UL Annual Awards ceremony.
Six scientists were granted the UL Award for Scientific Achievements. Professor Andris Actiņš and Asoc. Prof. Juris Cālītis received an award for establishing the scientific school. Mārcis Leja, Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, and Inta Mieriņa, researcher at the UL Institute of Philosophy and Sociology received an award for outstanding research results. An award for excellent doctoral thesis was given to Aleksandrs Belovs for his work Applications of the Adversary Method in Quantum Query Algorithms and Andris Levāns for the work Scenes of History. Historical Concepts of the Foundation of Livonia in 13th Century Historiography.
The UL Award for Scientific Achievements recognises contributions to implementing the UL strategy towards the status of a university of science. The award is given to individual candidates - staff members of the UL departments and scientific institutes.
The Award in Scientific Communication in the category Researcher of the Month was given to Skaidrīte Lasmane, Professor of the UL Faculty of Social Sciences. The Best research Award was given to Vita Zelče, Professor of the UL Faculty of Social Sciences, and Laura Uzule, PhD student for the research Latvian Day of the Dead Celebrations: Ritual Identity. The authors of the publications devoted to this research – UL students Lauma Abramoviča and Katrīna Žukova received certificates of appreciation. Scientific Communication Awards are granted in order to promote scientific work, explain its importance to a wider public and to praise the best researchers. The candidates for the annual award are chosen from the authors of UL collections Researcher of the Month and Research. Winners are chosen by readers’ and jury’s votes.
The UL Best Teachers Award and Rector’s certificate of appreciation were given to Inta Augustāne, English teacher at Riga State Grammar School No3, and Skaidrīte Rozentāle, Mathematics teacher at Saldus City Secondary School No2. Gunta Bērziņa, Head of Cēsis State Gymnasium received the Best School Head Award. These awards highlight teaching achievements and support teachers and school heads who have contributed significantly to preparing school students for studies at the UL.
The UL Employee of the Year Award was given to Inga Medvedis, the Head of the laboratory of the Faculty of Computing, and Dace Simsone, the Head of the Student Service. This award is granted to non-academic employees for their flexible and creative approach to work and for providing assistance to UL students, staff members and cooperation partners.
