“Currently, the majority of secondary school students are deciding on where to continue their education, therefore the University of Latvia (UL) reminds that all its study programs are accredited by the State, and after the successful graduation from the University, the received diplomas will be recognized both in our country and internationally. This also provides a sense of security to the present students as the UL, the largest and oldest higher education institution in Latvia, guarantees stability in education both now and in the future,” says Andris Kangro, the study pro-rector of the UL. Therefore, the students and those willing to study should not be concerned about the programs’ accreditation at the UL.

“The UL student representatives  are interested and involved in all program accreditation processes and do whatever they can to offer high-quality and recognized programs. The name of the UL, as well as its traditions and experience are a guarantee that the study programs are approved by the State and the university prepares the most of the State-requested professionals,” states Inguna Zariņa, a student of the UL Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art and a student representative at the Accreditation Commission of Higher Education Programs. The fact that there is no reason for concern is also proved by the paragraph No. 33 of the transitional provisions of the Law on Institutions of Higher Education, which states the following: ‘The accreditation time period for study programs  which are accredited until 1 August 2011, shall be extended until the moment when a decision is taken on the accreditation of the study direction of an institution of higher education or college or decision on the refusal to accredit the study direction of the relevant institution of higher education or college, if the accreditation time period of the study program has expired in the time period referred to.’ The accreditation process of the study directions has just started. Currently, the UL has 134 study programs enrolling 16,720 students from Latvia and foreign countries. The Accreditation Commission  evaluates study programs by a number of quality indicators: infrastructure, internship opportunities, students’ opinions regarding a particular program, employers’ reviews and many others. A study program can be accredited for two or six years, or not be accredited at all. By making a positive decision, the State allows a university to issue State-recognized diplomas, thus acknowledging that the program is of high quality and that the country needs such specialists. In their turn , the students can benefit from it by receiving State-guaranteed student loans, State-funded study places and scholarships. It should be noted that on 25 February , the Senate of the UL decided not to increase the tuition fees for students who will start their studies at the UL in the autumn semester of the 2013/2014 academic year.
