From November 23 till November 27, one of the world’s leading experts in education, Stanford University Professor Jonathan Osborne will be visiting Riga to carry out a cycle of seminars about argumentation skills in natural sciences in cooperation with the Academic Centre of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (DZM IC) of the University of Latvia (UL).

Professor Osborne is one of the most influential experts in education, and the educational paradigm is being changed under his guidance on a global level. He is the head of USA’s new educational standard for natural sciences and OECD’s PISA research project, as well as the president of the US National Association for Research in Science Teaching. The Professor will give a public lecture on “Where is science education headed?” The lecture will take place on Monday, November 23, 15:00-16:30 in the “Magnum” hall of the UL Academic Centre of Natural Sciences  (Jelgavas Street 1, Riga), in English with translation in Latvian. Limited number of participants, registration for the lecture November 9 - 19. Live video stream from 3:00 pm On November 24 and 25, the Professor will lead a two day seminar for education experts “Why must argumentation skills be included in the curriculum of science education?” Experts, teachers and professors from DZM IC, VISC (National Centre for Education), “Mission Possible” project and the UL, as well as researchers from the University of Tartu, will participate in the seminar.  On November 26, Professor Osborne will be introduced to the Latvian education system at Riga State Gymnasium No. 2. Students are welcome to participate in the presentation-discussion on “Argumentation skills in science education”. The discussion will be held in English at the UL DZM IC, room 107. On November 27, 13:00-15:30, Professor Osborne will take part in the discussion on raising student scores in the “Programme for International Student Assessment” (PISA) science research.
