Two candidates have been nominated for the post of the UL Rector: Professor Juris Borzovs from the Faculty of Computing and Professor Indriķis Muižnieks, UL Pro-Rector for Research.

Professor Borzovs has been nominated for the Rector’s post by the UL Faculty of Computing, and Professor Muižnieks - by the Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry, UL Institute of Chemical Physics and UL Institute of Cardiology.

Candidates for the Rector’s post must present a program for the UL future development. The programs will be available at the UL homepage. The Rector’s elections will take place on 4 July at 1 p.m. at the UL Great Hall, 19 Raiņa Blvd.

Professor Mārcis Auziņš has been the Rector of the University of Latvia since August 2007 and he was elected for two consecutive terms. According to the UL Constitution the same candidate for the Rector’s post shall not be elected for more than two times in a row. The Rector is elected by the UL Constitutional Assembly for a period of four years. The candidate is afterwards recommended by the Minister for Education and Science to be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia. The Rector takes up his or her responsibilities after the approval.

The Rector can be nominated by the UL faculties, institutes and agencies, as well as the Constitutional Assembly, Student’s Council and no less than 100 representatives of the academic personnel. The Rector can also nominate himself/ herself with support of no less than 100 representatives of the academic personnel.
