The Center for European and Transition Studies is organizing a Workshop on Developing Canadian Studies in “University Multidisciplinary Settings”.

On March 11, 2011, the 2nd workshop organised by the University of Latvia Centre for European and Transition Studies (CETS) on developing Canadian Studies in “university multidisciplinary settings”. Canadian Studies is being developed and implemented as a part of the EU external relations study course for European Studies masters programme. The workshop is supported by the Government of Canada and the Embassy of Canada to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The aim of the workshop is to discuss the development of Canadian Studies from multidisciplinary perspective and to build a network of interested academics and students across the Baltic States. The honorary quest and speaker at the workshop will be the Ambassador of Canada to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia H.E. R.Scott Heatheringhton.  The workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss scientific and research collaboration between academic institutions in the Baltic States and Canada, new approaches to the historic EU – Canada ties, the Canadian Studies course content being developed by the CETS, gender studies in the context of North American Studies, social policies, human trafficking and other issues relevant to Canadian Studies course content within the Baltic States higher education institutions curriculum, co-operation between the Canadian Studies Associations in the Baltic States and other issues. The Honorary Director of the European Commission Dr. Alexandre Berlin will share his extensive experience on the EU- Canada and Canada – EU study tours as well as new initiatives in the Baltic States to facilitate greater participation of students in exchanges with Canada.  Two guest speakers – Prof. Eduard M. Lavalle from the Capilano University (Vancouver, Canada) and Prof. Joan DeBardeleben from Carleton University (Ottawa, Canada) will present their views on Canada–EU relationship including implementation of the project on Canada – Europe Transatlantic Dialogue.  This exchange of experiences and opinions will be arranged through the SKYPE conference with Canadian speakers.   • to promote Canadian Studies courses in “university multidisciplinary settings”;
  • to facilitate discussions and collaboration with Canadian experts and potential counterparts for promoting academic cooperation between universities in the Baltic States;
  • to build a solid network for teaching and research in Canadian Studies between higher education institutions in the Baltic States in cooperation with Canadian partner universities;
  • to raise awareness of Canadian Studies as a subject in multidisciplinary studies.
The workshop will take a place at the University of Latvia Raiņa boulevard 19 from 13.00 until 17.30 in the Senate Room. Those who are interested are cordially invited to participate in this workshop!
