On May 13, Latvijas Avīze published the annual rating of higher education institutions in Latvia. The University of Latvia takes the first place and is followed by Riga Technical University and Riga Stradiņš University.

“The rating is based on statistical data, such as the number of students, graduates, members of academic staff etc., submitted to the Ministry of Education by higher education institutions. The prestigious and voluminous data base “Web of Science” and its section “TM Core Collection” were used for calculating the number of scientific publications. Only the most valuable publications such as articles and proceedings papers were taken into account whereas reviews were not considered”, said the authors explaining the rating methodology. UL Rector Prof. Mārcis Auziņš: “the UL is pleased that our long-term success of being the leader in the national rating of higher education institutions is grounded also in the results of international ratings. At the end of April, „QS Top Universities Stars” published the assessment of universities, and the UL has received four out of five stars, which is an excellent result and indicates high quality in such categories as studies, employment, research, international orientation, innovations, etc. Last year, the UL was among the top rated Baltic universities also in other international ratings. It gives us competition privileges both at national and international level, as well as an opportunity to attract the best students and academic staff. We are also happy that other higher institutions in Latvia, despite the previous resistance and criticism, have appreciated the importance of national and international ratings and their positive influence on the development of higher education.”
