The new Academic Centre of Natural Sciences will be open to UL students in September. The centre located at 1 Jelgavas Street has been built especially for the UL needs, it consists of 7floors, with the total floorspace of 17 000 m2. The academic centre will become home for Faculties of Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Earth Sciences, Medicine (pharmacology and biochemistry study programmes), as well as Department of Optometry and Vision Science of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics.

The UL students, staff members, and researchers will have better collaboration opportunities as well as modern organization of studies provided by six national research centres to be located in the building. The Academic Centre of Natural Sciences, the first of the three faculty buildings in the complex, will have an amphitheatre-type auditorium with 300 seats, modern audio-visual equipment and facilities for simultaneous interpreting in lectures or international conferences. There will also be four smaller amphitheatre-type auditoriums with 50 seats. All auditoriums and seminar rooms will be equipped with interactive or regular whiteboards, as well as multimedia projectors and screens. In the building, there will be 73 laboratory facilities for students and 65 scientific research laboratories. These facilities will be outfitted with high-performance equipment and new laboratory desks, sinks, etc. The currently used faculty equipment will also be moved to the new premises. Located on two levels, the new Natural Sciences library will include the current UL Library branches from 48 Kr. Valdemara Street, 4 Kronvalda Boulevard, and 10 Alberta Street with library facilities for both individual and group work.  WiFi network, fixed-line telephones, large capacity multifunctional colour printer and a plotter for large format printing will be freely available in the new building. For student and staff convenience, hallways will be equipped with armchairs and sofas, drinking water stations, as well as special enclosed rooms and counters, overlooking the meadow of Torņakalns. Students and staff members will have an opportunity to enjoy snacks and refreshments in a special dining hall/kitchen on the 1st floor, but kitchens on each floor will be available for the staff only. A dining facility located on two levels will provide warm and healthy lunches, including vegetarian options. Besides, we will try our best to avoid the long queues during lunch breaks. A modern relaxing area in the broad courtyard will be a unique feature of the new building. The first two floors will be open 24 hours a day. Construction progress: May 2015 Since March 2014 construction work has been intensive. Up to 650 builders are working simultaneously. The UL monitoring team supervises the project, and the project management team and the UL management coordinate the construction process. The construction works meet the time limits, and despite the tight schedule it is to be completed by August 2015. The current stage includes the following:
  • Interior finishing works, door assembly, tiling of sanitary facilities;
  • Construction of internal engineering communications and installing of equipment;
  • Setting up the laboratory equipment, purchased under the construction contract, on floors 3-5;
  • Installation of the decorative “X” elements and aluminium support grid for creeper plants on the facade of the building;
  • Construction of both driveways from Jelgavas Street;
  • Territory improvement: paving of the parking lot and bicycle parking area, building of sidewalks, borders, driveways and the main entrance area.
It is also planned to build a parking space for 100 cars and 200 bicycles in this construction phase. Moving to the new premises The building is to be put into operation in July 2015, and moving to the new premises could be organised in August 2015. A tender is currently announced for procurement of moveable specialized laboratory furniture, as well as furniture for auditoriums, library, corridors and offices, in order to provide comfortable and ergonomic study environment. Tender proposals were opened at the end of April, and equipping of the premises will start in summer. A tender for transportation of particularly complicated and sensitive scientific equipment is currently being prepared. The winner contractor shall dismantle, transport and set up the equipment with a total mass of about 40 tons.  A tender for transportation of the remaining laboratory equipment, computer hardware, chemical reagents, laboratory glassware, office items and documents will be prepared in the near future. A logistics services company will provide faculty laboratories and offices with the necessary packing materials and boxes. Consequently, it is advisable to decide what equipment would be transported to the new premises. For this reason we suggest planning the schedule so that the transfer process could be done in August. About the project For its 100th anniversary, the UL has set a goal to be ranked among the top 100 European higher education institutions and to establish a modern scientific centre similar to those of the world’s leading universities. The UL Academic Centre in Torņakalns will be located at 1 Jelgavas Street. The centre will be a driving force for innovations and it will offer a modern infrastructure with state of the art facilities to unite various scientists and students. The project foresees construction of the Academic Centre of Natural Sciences, territory improvement, and supply of necessary equipment and technologies. The total cost of the project is estimated at 32 351 490 EUR, where 27 498 766 EUR (85%) is the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) financing, 2 319 601 EUR (7, 17%) is state budget financing, and 2 533 123 EUR (7, 83%) is the UL financing. On September 27, 2013, the UL signed a contract with LNK Industries Group for the technical design of the first stage, construction, author supervision, built-in furniture, and equipment with a total value of 25 635 737 EUR with VAT. The project “University Infrastructure Modernisation within Priority Study Programmes Development” No 2010/0114/3DP/3.1.2.1.1./09/IPIA/VIAA/029 is implemented within ERDF sub-activity 3.1.2.1.1.  “Modernization of Premises and Devices for Improvement of Study Programme Quality at Higher Educational Establishments, including Provision of Education Opportunities for Individuals with Functional Disabilities”.
