This is the 11th Latvia Human Development Report to be published. The Latvian Human Development Report is published by the Advanced Social and Political Research Institute of University of Latvia (ASPRI) on a bi-annual basis.
Opening speech was conducted by Jānis Ikstens, Acting Director of Advanced Social and Political Research Institute of the University of Latvia and Mārcis Auziņš, Rector of University of Latvia. The presentations were given by the co-authors of the Latvian Human development Report: Brigita Zepa, Professor at the University of Latvia; Mihails Hazans, Professor at the University of Latvia and Iveta Ķešāne, Researcher at the Baltic Institute of Social Sciences. The opening ceremony was honored by the presence of a number of foreign diplomats and representatives of international organizations including International Monetary Fund Resident Representative in Latvia, the Director of the Goethe Institute, Ambassadors of Israel, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Estonia and the Republic of Poland.
This edition of the Report focuses on national identity at the crossroads of international mobility and uncertain capability. Leading scholars have joined forces to discuss the formation of national identity and the sense of belonging of different segments of Latvia’s society. The growing trends of emigration from Latvia have also received an in-depth treatment. Individual and collective strategies for future actions that result from emigration and the sense of belonging have been outlined. The report also reveals the palette of circumstances and techniques which facilitate an individual’s linkage to a place or a region.
