Comparative Politics and Government of the Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the 21st Century is a book by Daunis Auers, Associate Professor at the UL Department of Political Science. It was published by Palgrave Macmillan in London and New York in March, 2015. This is the first monograph by a Latvian research scholar published by the Palgrave Macmillan publishing house. It is also the first research monograph on the current Baltic political systems.
The book explores and compares the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian states since the restoration of their independence. Beginning with the political history of the region, the book focuses on the constitutional and institutional decisions made by the Baltic political leaders in the early 1990s. Prof. Auers draws comparisons between constitutions, governments and political leaders as well as local authorities, judiciaries, bureaucracies and security apparatus. Other chapters analyse the region’s political parties and electoral systems, civil society development and the influence of corruption. The book also explores relations primarily between the Baltic ethnic nations and Russian-speaking minorities of Latvia and Estonia. The final chapters give an overview of economic and social developments in the region as well as the Baltic States' cooperation on common aims for external security policy.
“Professor Auers provides the first genuinely comparative overview of Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian politics. His comprehensive and systematic analysis is based on extensive research. It is highly recommended for students of political science, yet easily accessible for anyone with a more general interest in the region.” – Andres Kasekamp, Professor of Baltic Politics, University of Tartu, Estonia.
“This comparative volume suitably highlights similarities and differences between the three Baltic states while at one end grounding the discussion in historical experience and at the other giving it a contemporary ring with colourful anecdotes. It both provides students with comprehensive coverage of these countries and offers essential background to those interested in current affairs of the region.” - Geoffrey Pridham, Professor of European Politics, University of Bristol, UK.
