The Library of the University of Latvia already fourth year celebrates international Open Access Week which this year will be held from October 22 till October 28. The Library of the University of Latvia is the most active populariser of Open Access resources in Latvia. This year during the Open Access week, the Library organizes two major events.

On October 24 from 6pm till 8pm discussion “How to google smart or how to distinguish good open access resources” in the University of Latvia’s “Science cafe” will be held. “Science cafe” is very popular discussion event in The University of Latvia. This year Library organizes discussion about the best ways to find and use open access resources to popularize open access resources to students. In discussion experts and teaching staff from the university will participate and talk about their experience. The scientific assistant from Advanced Social and Political Research Institute Janis Daugavietis will talk about different search and usage possibilities of open access resources. However Baiba Holma from The Department of Information and Library Studies will advise all attendants how to avoid information noise.  But Uldis Pavuls from Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art will give suggestion how to use Google options for searching better. And professor Maris Klavins from Faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences together with his PhD students Zane Vincevica-Gaile and Artis Robalds will discuss if open access resources are only easily accessible or they are also qualitative. After presentations from experts there will be an open discussion were all attendants will be able to participate.
Live broadcast of discussion will be availabe here. However on October 26 from 10am till 2pm workshop “Open Access publishing: possibilities and development” will be held. Since the first year of participating in the international Open Access week celebration, workshops organized by Library have become annual tradition. This year workshop can be divided in two major parts. First part of workshop concentrates on Open Access events and development in Latvia and world, and discusses the new framework program for research and innovation Horizon 2020. Second part of seminar will concentrate on Open Access publishing in Estonia and Latvia. Seminar will have guest speaker from Tartu University Library Elena Sipria-Mironov and recorded video presentation given by Caroline Sutton, Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association president.  The seminar will be held in Latvian and English.
Live broadcast of discussion will be availabe here. Also during this week in the Library of the University of Latvia all librarian will dedicate time to tell users more about open access resources. The Library of the University of Latvia is the National Open Access information centre in Latvia within the project OpenAIRE; the Library of the University of Latvia also supports Open Access to information in education and research within the research network ENCES (European network for Copyright in support of Education and Science).
