As Riga enjoys the honor of the European Capital of Culture this year, the focus of Riga Summer School 2014 will be on unusual culture in the neighborhoods of the Latvian capital. Besides learning during lectures, the participants – media, journalism and film students – will be searching for interesting cultural aspects in various places that usually stay hidden for foreigners and make short documentaries about them.
This year the summer school will welcome participants from Australia, Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa, Tanzania, United Kingdom and Uzbekistan. They were selected out of 87 applicants in 41 countries, who applied for the summer school. It will be already the fourth year in a row since this summer school is organized in Riga. In previous years, altogether 18 films about Riga neighborhoods have been produced. They can be viewed online at www.rigasummerschool.eu.
The scholarships for students are provided by the State Education Development Agency, DAAD and other public and private organizations in the student home countries. Riga Summer School is supported in other ways by Live Riga, Sixt, Tele2, Venden, Pērnes čipsi and Visual Culture Club.
Dates of Riga Summer School 2014 are August 3-17. Film world premieres are scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2014, at 19:00 at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Latvia. Everyone is welcome!
