On November 27-28 the University of Latvia will host „Verfall der Sitten und Moral” conference focusing on various exclusion and refusal discourses of Central and Eastern Europe, with particular reference to Germany and Latvia.

An interdisciplinary approach will be employed to understand and analyse political and cultural development of the society in Latvia from the 19th century to the modern day. Discourse analysis is an approach commonly used in various science disciplines. It serves as a linking element for all conference speakers and hopefully will bring them together for future research projects. Contemporary humanities and social sciences are occupied with understanding the processes of perception and refusal of social values. They also focus on questions about awareness of nations and ethnic groups within European sociocultural and sociopolitical mosaic. The aim of the project is to research diverse social discourses based on aspects of refusal and exclusion. Such aspects potentially generate negative stereotypes and might result in lack of tolerance in the society, eventually influencing political and social processes. Within the project framework on November 26 Prof. Dr. Claudia Kraft (University of Siegen) will give a guest lecture on “The contemporary of the non-contemporary: the role of gender in concepts of democratization since 1968 in Eastern and Western Europe” Conference programme The conference is organized in cooperation with the European Contemporary History Department of Siegen University and supported by the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation. The project financial support is provided by the Baltic-German University Liaison Office through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funded by The Federal Foreign Office of Germany.
